Misery Signals – Labyrinthian Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is amazing.

I feel like this message couldn't be any more obvious. It's definitely a message of cutting ties with someone (maybe or maybe not a significant other), but someone he's close to. He cuts ties, and must now walk the battered path laid out before him.

His pleas for strength are there because it is not easy block someone important to you from your thoughts.

After reading these lyrics again, I do think this song is a partial knock on religion. It's brilliantly subtle, though. I feel like both verses are the shots they take at religious views, or views in favor of fate, or predetermination. The chorus is a summation of man's options regarding these views, and the end is Peart's take.

I don't like to insert my opinion, but I very strongly agree in my belief that we are in complete control of our own destiny. I'm a skeptic in my beliefs in god, but not heavy handed. I feel it is beyond our means to prove or disprove the existence of a higher power.

Saves the Day – Jessie and My Whetstone Lyrics 15 years ago
I really like this song. I think this song isn't about a relationship, but rather a very particular instance. One single night with a girl he liked, they stayed up all the way through the morning watching documentaries. He probably really liked her, wanted to have sex, and/or start a relationship with her, but instead she basically told him to leave. He drove home in the early morning and was probably really tired, as well as disappointed by the outcome, so he "counted all the headlights" to make to sure he was alright.

It is one of those instances where you keep thinking about it for awhile, but nothing happens. She cut him off there, and "that was that".

I think this song essentially questions god as many people think they know him. I don't think he so much lost his faith in higher power all together, but he definitely seems to want to shed his beliefs of a god that people have contained in scriptures, and in their heads. Essentially by this song, along with "Contact", it is hard to love god, as people know him. A million prayers to god as we know him will not save even the most innocent person's life. God is faith, and nothing more, from what we will ever be able to perceive. Perhaps Cody's beliefs are taking a new form. One of his own.

I think that's the essence of faith. As long as people are comfortable in their beliefs, no matter what they are, they will likely live more happily. And if one's beliefs continually make them question if they are right, or put them at unease. They often seek to alter their beliefs.

I'm not wealthy at all, but I'm smart enough, and considerate enough to understand the fact that financial problems aren't the only problems people face in this world.

I can clearly see how being a celebrity has a price probably worth every goddamn dime they make. I feel sorry for people whose love lives are tracked, and documented, or can't even go out without a level of anonymity. Just because the nature of a problem is different doesn't make one person's problems any less important than anothers.

Well I think the straight edgers and you new junkies all got it wrong. Just because they do drugs or whatever doesn't mean that they won't ridicule people who get fucked up, and get themselves killed for it. "Let's do coke like we're vacuums" sorta gives that away. And for the record, everyone who mentioned weed alone is just retarded. There's a big difference between pot, and coke, as the song mentions. Think, before you talk.

How disappointing that no one has commented this absolutely amazing song! The middle segment where it picks up all the way to the end is just utterly incredible. EVERYONE GIVE THIS SONG ANOTHER LISTEN.

An absolutely incredible song that I really wish was longer. This song is so emotionally provocative. Whenever I listen to it, I can actually feel a surge of creativity. Great, great song.

Through rigorous training, I'm capable of playing the basslines start to finish in this song. All three musicians rock, but my gold star goes to Geddy, who has inspired me so much on the bass. Great song. I can't wait to see these guys live in July.

Yeah, people took this way out of context. It's basically that there are people who do not believe they have ANY control over their destiny.

Through personal observation I've noticed that people who do not believe in locus of control, that is, and control over their fate, as well as religious people, are those who are more often immoral. This isn't my knock on religion, but it seems easy for people to take refuge in a concept that they are out of control.

That said, this song does knock religion at least a little. "A planet of playthings, we dance on the strings of powers we cannot conceive" kinda gives that away.

Still, basically regardless of one's religious affinity, this song preaches locus of control, that people are in control of their destiny, and actions.

On a final conclusion, I don't care what anyone chooses to believe, but as a psychology major, validated studies have shown that people with strong locus of control, tend to be much healthier, both physically, and mentally. Food for thought; awesome song.

I believe you both are certainly on the right track. The beginning seems to be about some sort of muse, inspiration to write it. Perhaps through ups and downs, he found strength without her. Now he's offering that they change together, if she so chooses to make that choice with him. He is no longer the underdog, he is going to make the choices, and the changes, and it is up to her to accompany him or not. - This is just my interpretation!

I lost my older brother in a car crash, so I can relate on a fair degree. This song is just too powerful, too great. Brings tears and an attack of emotions. One of my favorite songs of all time.

I actually think Song of Songs is thoroughly correct. I'm in this EXACT same situation with an individual, and this song reminds me endlessly of it. Amanzing song, and don't patronize the intelligence of a 20 year old. A 20 year old is highly capable of ultimately feeling the effects of unrequited love. All that said, I definitely think this is about a girl, and not a religious message.
