Regina Spektor – The Calculation Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the first and second verse is about a couple that's just kind going along with their relationship without putting too much effort or thought into it. Maybe it's because they have a lot in common and were already really great friends. They have fun. They’re best friends. Everything fits - nicely - just so. They don't have to think about it. It’s fun and comfortable. BUT… because they’re already content with what they have, neither of them really takes that extra step to turn it into something deeper. So eventually things start to get stagnant.

Eventually they realize they need to be brave enough to open up to each other if they want it to last. To REALLY and TRULY let the other person into the deepest darkest parts of themselves. To share their vulnerabilities with each other. So by working at their relationship they re-ignite a spark between them.

I know a lot of people think the last verse is about trying to force love and it didn't end well. But I prefer the idea that it's about how the couple worked at their relationship and by building that trust, that's when the real spark ignited, that's when it "burned them up". Then and ONLY then did a deeper love begin to blossom. What can I say? I'm a romantic. :)

I totally agree with this. I like the idea that they worked at their relationship and it made their love grow deeper.

Jack Johnson – My Little Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
When Jack sang this in concert this summer it really made me tear up. It's short and simple but you can feel his heart went into it and it's a very easy song to relate to. It made me think of how I was thinking when my baby niece was born. Just lovely!

Jack Johnson – Only The Ocean Lyrics 13 years ago
For some reason when I first heard this I just automatically assumed it was about his father (a former surfer) who passed away. It would explain the going out to the water and the lines like "you don't love but you don't hate" and his own reflection of going out to the ocean eventually - "When this world is too much / It will be / Only the ocean and me"

I really like it nonetheless.

Portishead – Over Lyrics 16 years ago
In essence this song could be about so many different things. It could be about cheating with a lover, it could be about trying something new, or you could even twist the meaning to be about murder... it's very open ended in that way. For me personally I think it's about cheating.

I love how music (especially portishead's music) makes us all relate to a time in our own lives. For me this makes me think about how I found myself extremely attracted to an ex of mine who got married. It's a scary place to find yourself justifying your own happiness and what you would do to get it even at the sake of another's misery.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the intro is about 2 minutes too long, but that's just me... I like the song though. But I'd also have to agree with rossyvictor that the lyrics have a dark almost stalker vibe to them. Especially this part:

"And there are days when outside your window,
I see my reflection as I slowly pass.
And I long for the spirit perspective,
When we'll be lovers, lovers at last."

Mandy Moore – Gardenia Lyrics 16 years ago
I really think when she's singing "I'm the one who likes Gardenia, I'm the one who likes to make love on the floor" it's more a statement about how she's realizing who she is and what she likes. She's learning to identify herself as an individual and not as the person she tried to be in the relationship. It's really a song about learning to love yourself.

I also agree that this song is the best on the album. Very lovely and sincere.

Weezer – My Best Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't see this as being about platonic friends, unrequited love or about a dog. I just see it as knowing that the person you're in love with is your best friend. The best kind of relationship, in my opinion. Regardless, it's a fun and catchy song to dance around to.

Tegan and Sara – Nineteen Lyrics 16 years ago
I love hour universal their songs are. I think everyone goes through a phase like this in there life. For me, it just happened to be when i was 19 years old so it makes it all the more relative to my situation.

I think the meaning is clear by now, but for my take on it I see it as being a song about being too young to really understand love or have the ability to embrace it. You have all these intense feelings for someone and it's downright scary (as silly as that sounds). This could be about feeling like your 19 again, or thinking about the person you loved when you were 19 wishing the timing had been different.

Tegan and Sara – I Can't Take It Lyrics 16 years ago
I really see this song as possibly having 2 different meanings. The first I could see it as how you feel when a lover is leaving you. Everything is slow and painful "I can't take it" and you feel like you could just die right there.

At the same time, I can just see this as falling deeply in love with someone. A quite night laying in the arms of someone you love. Everything is so surreal and such a rush. Your heart feels so full that it almost makes you cry.

Such a gorgeous song! *sigh*
