I already love this song after just a day of having it! I love the mix and how during your first listen it is almost unpredictable. There are some songs that just follow the rules, the norm, you listen to the beginning and already know what the ending is going to sound like. This song breaks free of all of those rules. I love that. My favorite lines so far are "Laughter is eternity If joy is real" and "You don’t know how beautiful You don’t know how beautiful you are You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you? You don’t know how beautiful you are" but that will probably grow and change as I listen more. As for the meaning, from my listenings so far, I think that mikevox has a good idea. No Line on the Horizon is going to be awesome, I can't wait! |

To me this song is a letter that a soldier writes to his beloved on the day that the war he in is ending. "All is quiet on New Year's day A world in white gets underway I want to be with you, be with you, night and day Nothing changes on New Year's day On New Year's day" - Tt does not necessarily have to be January 1, it could mean New Year's Day as in a time to start over, the war is over and it is time to start a new "year" or chapter in his life. Even in all this excitement he still craves to be with her. "I will be with you again I will be with you again" - This sounds to me like a jubilant murmured realization, that he really will be with her again, that he made it through, he can't really believe it yet. "Under a blood red sky A crowd has gathered, black and white Arms entwined, the chosen few The newspapers says, says Say it's true, it's true And we can break through Though torn in two We can be one" - Under the war-torn sky, a group of officers and officials of all different races have gathered together and put aside their differences. They are the chosen few to go through with the negotiations. The newspapers confirm all the rumors that the war has ended. He is jubilant about it. "I, I will begin again I, I will begin again" - He will start his life anew after the horrors that he has witnessed. "And so we're told this is the golden age And gold is the reason for the wars we wage Though I want to be with you Be with you night and day Nothing changes on New Year's day On New Year's day On New Year's day" - We're told that this is the golden age of society but he is wondering if that is true then why are all these wars being wages, for money and gold. He then repeats his affirmation that even though he is witnessing history in the making, he still wants to be with her. |

| I agree with almost all you said here, Mephistocles, it really makes sense. And you're right about the "little sister" being his wife, at least I think so. In Song of Songs, The Lover calls The Beloved "sister" and the note on the bottom says that it's common to refer to your lover as your sibling in Middle Eastern poetry (at least at the time) and Bono gets a lot of inspriration from the Bible so it would make sense for the "little sister" to be Alison. | |

I don't think that the man in this song is actually having an affair. I think that he is reassuring his wife that he never would cheat on her. I could never take a chance Of losing love to find romance This is saying (at least in my opinion) that this guy wouldn't risk losing the love of his life so that he could have romance with another, possibly younger woman. I really love the lines: The soul needs beauty for a soul mate When the soul wants… the soul waits … I think that this is saying that you should wait for sex until marriage. That "beauty" is for your soul mate and when you want the best sexual experience, you wait until you meet that person. I think that "love and faith and sex and fear" is a lot what marriage is about: love obviously, the faithfulness that they promised each other when they were married, sex again obvious, and fear of what their lives would be like if they did break those vows and separate. This song is beautiful. The lyrics (as usual with Bono) are absolutely incredible. I especially love the last few lines: I reached out for the one I tried to destroy You You said you'd wait Till the end of the world It really expresses how loving and forgiving God/Jesus is; he was willing to forgive the person who tried to destroy him. That's real love. |
