I think the fact that Stuart Murdoch can write a song like this and still make it so good is quite impressive. Also, i thinkk it's good that Murdoch writes about stuff that isn't normally in songs. It shows that he writes about what he wants to write about and doesn't care about being judged by anyone else. Also, it gives normal people something different but something they can relate to all the same. Well, some normal people ;). |

I thought the song was about settling down with someone who you don't really love because they're the best you can do (a bit like You can do better than me in that respect), but you keep on thinking about whether you would have had true love if you had been/done something different (had something charming to say). I thought that the person singing this song (i don't know if Gibbard is talking about himself) thought he never gave himself enough of a chance or didn't sell himself well enough because he didn't have the courage to talk to girls. |

Only thinking of a small bit of the lyrics and thinking about how much of B&S songs are about religion, i thought it could in some ways about someone who is a devout catholic/muslim ect. staying devout while everyone gives up on religion. I thought the "kids" might not be her kids specifically but the knew generation that doesnt really respect religion. "You'll blow them all to the wall When they realise what you've been working for You've been working for You've been working for" I thought God is what she has been working for and they will find out when they die. Also, "the fools who worship no one but themselves" seems to suggest this aswell. I'm not particularly religious and i probably wouldn't have thought about this meaning if i hadn't know other B&S songs were about religion but this is the meaning i've thought of since i heard this song |
