In the Lungs version, at least, there's that 'watery' vocal effect toward the end of the song (that makes it sound somewhat like she's singing underwater) that's just killer. I haven't really given the song much thought since I really just got into Flo + Machine a DAY ago-- Can't stop listening-- Incredible SOUND. I might amend this with my thoughts later. <3 |

It does seem like a pretty clear allusion to God. I love and enjoy this song even though I'm not a Christian, or a person who believes in a God. It's sung so intensely! I can't say I've ever felt emotions that powerful about someone, but I hope I can some day. |

i have been relistening to this album over the past few days and this song, pretty popular for a good reason-- it's very well composed. anyway, i wanted to share what i gather from it since i don't even think i'll understand what i'm trying to say myself unless i write it. here goes: the first halves of the first two verses; [what if i wanted to break; laugh it all off in your face... what would you do? ETC.] really strikes me as... "what if i wanted to suffer you, what if i continued to 'put up with' this situation? would you have it in you to end this? (relationship)" while the second parts; [what if i fell to the floor? couldn't take this anymore? what would you do?] contrarily asks "what would you do if i ended this? (relationship)" and it seems to appeal to the 'addressee' with the idea that the 'speaker' thinks the addressee is apathetic to the condition of things, and it's frustrating, leading to the chorus. the chorus has the same kind of doubled up thing, with the [come, break me down] almost begging the addressee to 'end it (the relationship)', but in the second part, [i am finished with you], the speaker's again frustrated enough to 'end it' himself. another facet of the song that is striking is the difference in depth of the characters, or the assumed difference. [you said you wanted more. what are you waiting for? i'm not running from you.] makes me think that the addressee at some point expressed interest in a deeper relationship and deeper understanding of the speaker... but when the speaker bared themselves to the addressee, they withdrew, like as if the speaker was too overwhelmingly... deep? i can't think of a good word! but, it's like saying 'i want to see!' and then turning away. that kind of reaction and distancing hurts, of course... and now the addressee has revealed that they are not the person the speaker thought they were. i bet that sounds really confusing and stupid. anyway. just pretend i said: "omg i love this song!!!1 so-and-so is sooo hott." if it doesn't make sense or seems 'emo'. whateverrrh. |

Most of the 'Summer and it's raining' lines sound more like 'Summer without rain/raining' to me. The last line is definitely 'summer and it's raining', though. Also, the lines 'bloody announcement that's the way it should be; taint the fox and now you let him run' sounds more like 'bloody nails, but that's the way it should be; you taint (or take?) the fucks and now you let him run'. I also think all of the 'til it's crashed' lines are 'two hearts crashed'. Ummah... Also I think it's: 'lean on my wall, try to stop this shaking, look outside' instead of the former. At least, that's what I gather, and I think some of it makes more sense... Not that it has to. Anyway, I adore this song. The emotion is so imperceptible and I think that's what makes it great. It's hard to tell whose 'dream was broken.' |
