I love this song, and I love Rilo Kiley, and I love Elliott Smith (the latter the most of course) and you can't deny that this song is totally influenced by Elliott. That takes nothing away from it at all though. |

Taking it literally it seems like it's about a bunch of vegetables sitting out in a yard and admiring their owner who used to come outside and mow the lawn and play with the dog and whatnot so the vegetables were happy and didn't feel like they were just vegetables! But then she gets a man and a job and stops spending time outside with the vegetables so it's all just a waste of time for them now :(
So metaphorically speaking, i take it wayne and co are the vegetables and there was this girl who used to hang out with them all the time, but then she got a boyfriend who didn't like them and now they never get to see her |

To me it kind of seems like he's talking about cloning, from the point of view of the souls that enter clones while they are being incubated maybe? but everytime they become born, as in the embryionic process begins, they get killed by the scientists and never get a taste of being able to think (god or whatever's gift to humans), thus they are always brain-dead... sucks to be them |

It's simply about people using things for purposes other than their popular use. Why should we use things for only one purpose when if you think outside of the box you can think of other things it would be good for? Although in some cases like the one's in the song, they don't always serve a better purpose... hehe that's what i get from it anyways it makes sense to me |

This song has to be about how when people can't think of anything better to do in life, they sit in front of the tv and turn it on so they can tune out of their life and tune in to fake tv land |
