When Freddie was younger and in a boarding school in India, his family came from Zanzibar to visit him. He was staying with his aunt and grandmother. While there, his sister slammed a rock into his face (she must have been pretty young) and caused a scar on his right cheek just below his eye. You can actually see the scar in some closeup photos of Freddie. The reason she did this is because his sister and cousin were outside that day playing with their dolls. They were pretending they were queens having a tea party, complete with champagne and caviar. And I'm guessing Freddie wanted to get in on the game. They were probably teasing Freddie, probably even let him play along for awhile. At one point he took one of the dolls, inspiring Kashmira to pick up a rock, and hit him in the face. I'm sure Freddie was hurt and angered. There's no telling what he said to his sister. Probably the next week or thereabout, the family left, sailed away back to Zanzibar leaving poor Freddie all alone once again. Now this song, "Sail Away Sweet Sister". Brian wrote the song. But I suspicion he wrote it for Freddie. Brian was always writing songs like that, mystifying things. And I wouldn't be surprised if Freddie didn't help him write it. I also wouldn't be surprised if Freddie didn't specifically request Brian or the other to write certain songs for him. It's about the relationship between an older brother and his younger sister. The relationship between this song and Killer Queen can be found in these respective lyrics: "Hey little babe you're changing Babe are you feeling sore? It ain't no use in pretending You don't wanna play no more" "Drop of a hat she's a willing as Playful as a pussy cat Then momentarily out of action Temporarily out of gas To absolutely drive you wild, wild.. She's all out to get you She's a Killer Queen Gunpowder, gelatine Dynamite with a laser beam Guaranteed to blow your mind Anytime, ooh" So, anyone with a good imagination or intuition, piece those together and see what you come up with. Brian said himself there is a connection between Killer Queen and Sail Away Sweet Sister. Oh,there's also a connection to both of these songs in Bohemian Rhapsody, which I wrote in detail on that song. | Queen – Dear Friends Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The song is a forewarning of a death which may come, spoken as if the death has already happened. It speaks to those left behind -- the family and friends. Possibly at the funeral. The departed one gave his love and his time freely to his family and friends while he was alive, and maybe that love wasn't returned. Now, that love has been taken away by death. They are very sorrowful, because they realize too late that more time could have been spent with the departed one, making memories and expressing their love for him. But instead, all they have left are tears to dwell upon. The speaker, although he knows why the loved one has died (perhaps, suicide?) , dares not to say it in front of the grieving family and friends. In the song "Liar" at the end, Freddie sings "so now you know you could be dead before they let you in..." meaning that sometimes, people withhold love until tragedy strikes. Then, they are ready to give the love they withheld, only it is too late. A love is won (the deceased has finally won the love in the end. Although he craved to receive it while he was alive, he knew it would never be forthcoming unless he died). Now the speaker is telling the family and friends, to "go to sleep and dream again". The departed one will visit them in their dreams, so that they can finally speak the words and show the love they had before withheld. Only then, will all their sorrow and regret disappear. They can dry their tears and smile again. |

Hey *ghost in the snow* thanks. Sorry it was so long. I could add one more thing........in the Bohemian Rhapsody video, on the head shots of all 4 guys if you look closely at them, the lighting is just right so it looks as if Freddie is lying in a coffin, with his hands folded across his chest in a kind of death pose.........and the other 3 are the 'pallbearers'. It's like Freddie is sending the message "Hey everyone this is how I would look if I were lying dead in my coffin. Jest a little sumn ta think about." Morbid, yah? But interesting. |

This song was written in the style that most songs are written. Freddie said that the song was just a bunch of stuff thrown together to make it sound good. I believe him. (Someone also quoted Freddie as saying the song was about relationships. ) However, in order to do that he needed to draw on experiences, feelings and emotions from his past. Come on, a song this brilliant and complex can't have just been strewn together with a bunch of meaningless words and sentences, not completely anyway! Here I'd like to throw in my 2 cents worth. Freddie spent most of his childhood in India in a boarding school. I feel that Freddie must have been deeply hurt (although he never admitted it) by his family sending him off so far away from home at such a young age. He stated in an interview that he rarely saw his parents as a child, except on the very few occasions they would visit him in India or he got to come home on holiday. I also feel that in this boarding school, Freddie really began to change within himself. It has been stated Freddie was sexually abused in this setting. This may have caused varied medical problems for Freddie. (Hence the reference to physical pain in the song). When he finally came home to stay, he was no longer the innocent Farokh Bulsara. That boy died in India. Freddie killed his former self because it was the only way he could deal with the things he had to deal with there. Plus, he probably felt more than a hint of anger at his family for leaving him there. He may have decided that if they didn't love him enough that they had to send him away, he would change himself. He would become someone different, someone stronger. The sweet shy child inside was slowly dying. He missed his family, and felt very lonely. But he had to change to survive. Now, bear with me.... Someone said in a forum, that there is an interview on DVD with Freddie's sister Kashmira. She tells a story of how she once threw a rock and hit Freddie in the face (he does actually have a scar underneath his eye on his right cheek, which can be seen in photographs) because he took the dolls that she and her cousin were playing with (he was probably just teasing them). I didn't see the interview so I can't verify this. But there is a possibility that this happened while the family was visiting Freddie in India at his boarding school, because the girl cousin is mentioned and I assume this girl cousin that Kashmira (Freddie's sister) was playing with was the daughter of Freddie's aunt and uncle, whom he was staying with while at the boarding school. Freddie must have been deeply hurt by this emotionally. This is the little sister that he loved and protected. But she so carelessly thew the rock at him, and could have put his eye out or even killed him if she had hit him just so. In any case she did cause a deep scar on his face. He must have felt at that moment she didn't love him very much. He probably bled. He probably went into the house, where his mother took her thumb, wet it with her own spittle and thumbed some of the blood and dirt off the wound. Now we have........... "Stone me and spit in my eyeee......." The next day, or shortly thereafter, his family was due to sail back to Zanzibar, leaving him there alone, again. (Love me and leave me to dieee....) After all, if they really loved him, how could they just leave him there.....he felt as if he were dying. He begs his parents to let him go back home with them. (No, we will not let you go). He turns to his mother, pleading with her, begging her. It does no good. After all, it's for his own good. It's the best chance he's got to get a decent education. The other part of the song probably deals with Freddie's teenage years, after he has moved with his family to England. By this time, he has completely changed. There were probably times when he thought about killing himself to teach them all a lesson. They never really loved him anyway. They sent him away, then left him 'to die'. Only there is still a part of him left. Since he doesn't really want to die, he must completely kill off Farokh Bulsara, by becoming "Freddie Mercury". "Any way the wind blows.....doesn't really matter to him." I could write more, but Im tired. Anyway, anyone can kind of figure where I was heading with this. |
