| The imagery I get is lovers in America and Russia... don't know why. Definitely has a Cold War feel to me though. I could just be crazy. | |

I think it might be about the Iraq War, because in the background of the song it sounds like there's a news report... and I didn't hear all of it, but it says something about Gulf. I thought of Gulf War. I could be completely wrong. And somehow we just can't help but feel We beat up the wrong guy Seems to support it, since I heard that line right after the background thing. |

@ synthyte I had similar feelings about this song. In fact, I wanted to share that express point about it not being a girl. If you look at this "love story" like it's one of Conor, and say a guy (not saying he's gay... but still) it would make a lot more sense, at least to me. Especially this part: "back in New York they can't ever find this out" He doesn't want friends to know he's had a one night stand with a guy. "There are things we do, that we're really not allowed" Self-explanatory in the case of Conor and a guy. "We can say anything, but we just can't say it loud." Again, ashamed of the fact that it's a guy. Also, "You said you wanna die, now you say you wanna live" Perhaps the other guy is in the same position as Conor, and therefore is very ashamed at what he did. Just my take on it. I'm a big fan of this song and have been trying to determine the real story behind the lyrics and I think it really is about Conor (or someone) exploring their sexuality, even though it may not be in the best way. He gets drunk, goes to a hotel with a guy, wakes up with him the next morning. At first they're showing regret and shame, then they sort of come to terms with it? The second and third stanza kind of emphasize that part of the story, showing that Conor's a little annoyed perhaps with him at first, then at the end of the third stanza he's kind of like "okay, we already did that, might as well make this last as long as we can." It's a very deep song to me and I think many people can relate with it. Don't hate on my comments please, am just offering food for discussion. |
