| The Futureheads – Heartbeat Song Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Love it. Meaning should be fairly obvious. It's about falling in love with someone and all the feeling that go along with that. I really dig the line about "singing out of tune". It threw me for a loop the first time I heard it, but I realized it's meant that they're singing out of tune to something on the radio, and it's not the same as the "heartbeat song", but he still want to sing with them anyway. |

| Portugal. The Man – Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This is an awesome piece. So much going on musically and vocally. For me, the message seems to be about living in a fantasy world, oblivious to how shallow and cheap your life has become, and begging the recipient of the mesage to show them how to overcome the way they're living. He's "got it all" in his own mind, but realizes he'll be looking at his life with regret after the "revolution" of better living. The overall yearning for love and redemption gives me the shakes every time I hear this. Also, the music video (movie?) is fantastic in its disturbing surrealness. |

| The Naked And Famous – Young Blood Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This song is gorgeous. I feel it's about young romances and how they play out. Constantly shifting moods, the feeling of surrender and wholeness permeating your body and spirit, the joys and despairs of being involved with another person. I see it as a fundamentally melancholy song, focusing on a relationship falling apart, but with a strong undercurrent of optimism and hope for the future. The "Pair of forgivers" line sounds like a couple who has tallied up the mistakes they each have made, decide to forgive each other and move on with a new (or renewed) relationship. My favorite line is "bittersweet between my teeth".Sounds like it's driving at a situation where you realize you're in a relationship that you know is going to end, but you still love the person immensely. Bitter because of the impending heartbreak, but sweet because of all the good experiences you've shared and the knowledge you'll both fall back in love again. |

| Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I love this song. As soon as I heard the lyrics, I knew exactly what Mumford was talking about. Suffice it to say I have gone through a relationship where all I did was fuck up and push a beautiful, wonderful woman's love away, due to my own petty problems and insecurity. An added bonus, for the title, "little lion man" There was a significant event in the relationship that involved a small stuffed lion We still talk, and she basically said this song is my life's story. But it was not your fault but mine and it was your heart on the line I really fucked it up this time, Didn't I my dear? Didn't I my dear? |

| Sea Wolf – Orion & Dog Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Love this song. So beautiful, especially with the acoustic and strings combined during the break. I think Orion & Dog may just be an Orion legend as told by Sea Wolf. The main theme seems to be Orion professing his love to something, perhaps a female deity, and the only way they can be together is with his death. Sad, but that's what I'm getting from it. |

| You hit it right on the head, broski. | |
| Brandon Flowers – Crossfire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is now about Ninjas. And Houdini. And Charlize Theron. But in all seriousness, I see it as being about a couple going through a relationship that other people do not want them to be in. SO they're in between "Heaven" (their love) and "Hell" (the negativity of their surroundings). All in all, an awesome song. I'm glad to see Mr. Flowers hasn't lost his touch. |

| Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I beleive archers is an allegory for modern religion. I won't rendundant by copy previous posts, but I got the whole god-crazy christians beating their 'enemies' with a book that tells them to preach love vibe. | |
| Rise Against – Hero of War Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Personally, I think this is just the story of a soldier and his emotions regarding the irony of his situation. He starts out as a patriotic adventurer and ends the song embittered and disillusioned with his conception that war is glamorous and fun. I don't think the song is meant to bash soldiers, it's meant to show that all humans are capable of making mistakes while still holding onto a higher ideal. |

| Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Wow, the first time I heard this song it blew me out of the water. The intro riff is just so simple and sweet it defies logic. I won't waste time explaining lyrics here, seeing as this has already been (unneccesarily) been beaten to death, but I will say the meaning struck me as strong as anyone else here. I admire the hell out of MM for their style, both musically and stylistically, which I could never hope to emulate. Oh well. I'll just Float On anyway. |

| Sea Wolf – Black Leaf Falls Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I don't know. Maybe it's about ending the relationship. They took a trip to "Black Leaf Falls" and he'd "love her anywhere but Black Leaf Falls" maybe a pivotal location at the end of a doomed relationship. Still, very catchy. |

Yeah, definitely the Night's watch. I love the riff in between the sung verses. Very catchy. |

| Theory of a Deadman – In The Middle Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This is me and my girlfriend's song. we take it to mean watching the world go by outside you while she and I lay there together and just feel each other's heartbeats. Love in its purest form. |

| The Killers – Human Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I agree with the death and euthanasia connotations. "Up to the platform of surrender I was brought but I was kind" Sounds like a guy who's going to die, but is ready to go. "my sign is vital, my hands are cold" still alive, but just barely. Right before my grandpa died, his hands were very cold. and the whole "will your system be alright" verse I think it means the narrator's loved ones go home feeling very sad about the loss of their loved one. they've both lost their "heartbeats" in addition, saying goodbye to all his virtues and qualities, seeing as he's dying. all in all, I love this song. Very sad, yet very beautiful. |

| The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Am I the only one who thinks the various professions in this piece could have a double meaning as phases in american culture? In the first verse, we have the engine driver, a figure integral to the 1800's. The Train was used as transportation across the expanse of the North American continent. Its use, however, decreased once highways and airplanes were widespread. In the second verse, we have the county lineman, a figure who represents the widespread boon of electricity. This began in the late 1890's and continued up into the 1930's. After this period, corporations started handling the electric lines, taking 'county' out of the phrase 'county lineman'. In the third verse, we have the moneylender, who I believe represents the commercial engine in america that has been picking up speed since the forties in terms of multi-national corporations and big business. Money lending, in and of itself has given way to just plain old banks. In this way, money-lending from an individual has mainly gone away. In a sense, the three main verses all describe a part of Americana that has faded away, hence the "and if you don't love me let me go." The writer however, is different from these three professions, as writers have endured for centuries. Here, I believe meloy places the main emphasis on the love thing, and tring to forget his past love. As a small twist, has anyone noticed how hard it is to come across good fiction these days? On a different note, this is probably my favorite off of Picaresque. It seems so melancholy and beautiful, and it really speaks to me. I don't think i've done a very good job here, but I just wanted to see what you guys thought. |
