Protest the Hero – A Plateful of Our Dead Lyrics 13 years ago
The teenage heartbreak is that between Kezia and the prison guard. They have obviously had a relationship, and she is pregnant with his child. This is made obvious in the lines of "Blindfolds Aside" that say "I watch a woman that I know. I watch my hopes and my own future." and later on in "The Divine Suicide of K." where she mentions the " trembling fetal life inside."

This song is not from any particular perspective of any of the three main characters. It was written to show the social climate that the characters were in, and ultimately what they are at odds against. The line "I'd rather kill a stupid flower and spread it's seeds around. Until a garden with our bullet-laden morals will me found." Shows society's weak answer to the problem of prostitution. A problem that has a significant affect on the lives of all three main characters, who don't agree with society's simple judgement. Both the priest and the guard want Kezia to live. The priest doesn't think that the morals in the bible are relevant anymore as he has had a falling out of faith, while the prison guard realizes that she was a prostitute out of necessity, as he is a murderer out of necessity. They both think that she does not deserve to die as the rest of society does. Kezia on the other hand is an obvious feminist with a background in feminism. Her mother writes her a letter where she tells Kezia that she is dying for a noble cause (The warmest of blankets is six feet of soil). Kezia decides that she will martyr herself for the feminist cause. That is why this is now considered a "Divine suicide" and that is also why it is considered hara-kiri in this song.

Darkest Hour – Full Imperial Collapse Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know how you could interpret this in any other way than in that of being critical of religion. "Shine on you non-believers" means exactly that. People who don't believe in god should shine on and have their voice heard. This song is a war cry for people who don't believe in religion.

Religion is "presumed an unstoppable force, through the ages spilled onto pages." Pages of a religious book.

"Compelling evidence out in the open, there's not even anybody to hide it from." This refers to scientific advancements and debunking of religious scripture that shows the path to non-belief.

Darkest Hour – An Ethereal Drain Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about how detrimental believing in god is. This is most clear in the line "So sing your praise with your noiseless voices." It's just saying that praying and hoping for things from god is useless as voices directed toward him are noiseless. "Refind relief in chaos unleashed," is say that letting go of the rigid views of religion for that of uncertainty and chaos is freeing. "suppress us
impress us with subtle delusions and life-like proportions bled into one another" expresses John's views that religion, while it is desired, is delusional and how religious ideas spread because of how people try to make them seem "life-like".

Darkest Hour – Demon(s) Lyrics 15 years ago
Once again. This song is about religion limiting us. "We can lift up our hands to the SKY,
Find all of those strings that they're pulling and keep from falling back, Into our old rhythmic poses, Turning us into machines" Following the way of living life like religion tells us to turns us into people who act predictably like machines. The strings to the sky are being pulled by a perceived God.

And all these illusions (These illusions are the ideas taught in religion) dropped on a sea of believers (people who believe the illusions)
Crowding around as they hunt me down and throw me out (nonbelievers are outnumbered and often silenced by the loud demands of the religious masses.)
While all the rest of the others
Hang their heads in the dredges (Nonbelievers, as opposed to believers, are not well organized. Many nonbelievers claim to be believers just to fit in so they don't have to deal with the social stigma of being a nonbeliever. While John is literally screaming at the top of his lungs about his beliefs, many other nonbelievers are silent.)

Try looking at many of their other songs in the context of not believing in religion. I think you will be surprised that many (not all) are centered around this idea (especially on Deliver Us and The Eternal Return.)

Darkest Hour – Doomsayer (The Beginning Of The End) Lyrics 15 years ago
Rashul, you are totally right. But this song is about waking up and realizing that you are the only one that can save yourself from something in particular. This something in particular is religion. The lines that blatantly point to this are: "Who can save you? Not their Gods and not their Masters...who will free you, look in the mirror" "I'll be your doomsayer and show you everything that you'll never see behind borrowed eyes" 'Borrowed eyes' means seeing only what the religion tells you is true. "It brings you to your knees." "You're not alone decrepit monuments sit on their own thrones the crushing weight relentless in its pull resist! or be diluted with the rest." John also refers to the tides in this song. The song, "The Tides" is also about resisting religion.

Darkest Hour – For The Soul Of The Savior Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is not about a girl or politics. It is about atheism, as it a good portion of their music. The first line, "That's alright because you wish you were dead." Alludes to the comments that religious people make about how much better it will be in the afterlife. "I'll take my chances with the unworthy," means that he is a skeptic about religion, leaning toward logic and reason as a way to view the world. "You know the quick path, the righteous the way back." Is saying that you claim to know that your religion is true. "So save a prayer for me. Don't waste a prayer on me." Means you can believe what you want to believe, but praying for me is a lost cause. I don't believe in your God, and I make my own decisions. Praying for me is a waste of time, pray for something worth while. Read closely and you will see that the rest of the song supports this central idea.

I think that they are probably using the Tunguska event as an allusion rather than writing about it directly.

Darkest Hour – No God Lyrics 15 years ago
It may make sense, but it is not correct. It is obviously, "Your reflection." Not only does it sound more like, "Your refelction," it also makes more sense. The idea of a person with faith, or religion having a reflection is a common theme throughout the album. It is referenced in the songs "Blessed Infection," and "A Distorted Utopia." The idea that someone has a "reflection" is that they only accept ideas from people and sources that confirm their own world view, thus confirming what they already believe. These people don't look for ideas anywhere else, and reject anything that disputes what they believe. They may as well be looking in a mirror to find out what they believe.

Wow grammatical error. "...Vampires are..."

Darkest Hour – Blessed Infection Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think Vampires is quite what John was thinking of when writing this song.

By saying that the infection is "Blessed" it is implying that religion is the infection. Throughout the album believers of religion and non believers are referenced to having or not having a reflection. An example of this is in "No God," there is a lyric that says "There's no salvation in a world where you worship your reflection." In this song "There's nowhere to run from the one with no reflection." Implies implies that religion is a falsehood spread by people with the same infectious idea. I think that John compares religion to an infection because it is an easy way for people to think about their world. It is easy to say that there is an invisible guy in the sky that loves us, wants to teach us lessons and to live a good life. Human beings are constantly looking for the easiest way of doing things and religion is the easiest way of understanding life. In contrast it is hard and kind of scary to think critically and logically about existence. Easy to understand ideas spread like infection through the laypeople of our society.

That bad habit is religion.

We can lift up our hands to the sky
Find all those strings that they're pulling
And keep from falling back
Into our own reposes
It's turning us into machines.

I think this means that we should not keep relying on god as an explanation for everything.

Darkest Hour – No God Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics submitted on this site are incorrect. Kinda funny actually, but horribly wrong. Here are the correct lyrics.

There's no salvation
In a world where you worship you're reflection
And no redemption for a life of servitude
You bow and you heed
On hallowed command
Your holy land is all rot and reeking
It's a safe place
A hollow escape
A palace of concrete and glass
Keep waiting, keep waiting for

No god to release you
No god to make you fall to your knees

There's blood on these pages
And a war inside your head and with yourself
Through the ages through every form of hell
It's a safe place
A hollow escape
A palace of concrete and glass
Keep waiting, keep waiting for

No god To consume you
No god To bear your burden
No god To use you
No god no it's all an illusion

A usurper of life
It'll bleed every last drop And it'll suck all the breath out of you
And leave you forsaken

There's no god to release you
There's no god to make you fall down to your knees
There's no god to consume you
There's no god To bear your burdens
There's no god no it's all an illusion.
