Bright Eyes – Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, I agree the song is totally pessimistic, but at the same time...he seems to be offering love as hope--the one thing that'll break the monotonous rhythm. Because he says that “everybody knows it’s all about the things that get stuck inside of your head…the songs your roommate sings, a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed” and then at the end, he asks “Where are you Arienette?” And in the song it seems like this girl left him because he changed, but I guess you see he still loves her and that for all his hopelessness, he can’t help but cling to the hope that having her back will change things, because it’s the memories of her that are stuck in his head. If you look at it this way...then the song becomes a lot sweeter...well, still sad and haunting and cynical, but I don’t know...also revealing that he feels this way because his heart is broken. And so when he's crying out for Arienette, he's crying out for a cure, because he doesn't want to feel this way towards the world.

Architecture in Helsinki – The Owls Go Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about being broken hearted and not knowing what to do with your memories...I personally like to apply it to being a relationship, but I guess it could be anything (childhood would definitely fit w the tone of the song).

When it says "finding a replacement with a heart sedated," to me that really captures that feeling when you're so heart broken, you can only find a "replacement" because you're unable to feel the same passion you feel for the person who broke you.

I think the whole song the singer is saying he really doesn't want to get over this person...he doesn't want to bury the memories in a place where it's dark...he wants to hold on to them, to "protect" them, but also "not be nervous" around these memories, which I feel is saying he doesn't want to be vulnerable to these memories because they still hurt.

When he says he's bursting with pride because his heart is finally mending..but then immediately contradicts it with "it's not too late to change your mind," I feel that's meant to show he doesn't actually want to get over this person, and that's why the song ends with "it shouldn't feel like it is ending." He can't really let himself heal.

I don't know though...i mean, I've like intensely personalized this to my own situation. haha
