| Ah, davewah3, there's where you fall into the trap of Deconstuctionism, that words have no meaning outside of individual interpretation. As open minded as this may sound, it's flat out, indisputably wrong. If it were true, then I may take the first line of your last comment to mean, "Song have only one meaning and that meaning is what the author intended." See, in order for communication to exist there must be some sense of standardization and to decipher a song, one must look plainly at what is being said and be on the look out for explanations from the author, which, of course, trumps anything that we discuss here. | |

I really don't see how this song can be about a guy/girl relationship...... The evil angel seems to denote a definitely ominous figure, similar to an angel of death. I took it that, because the singer is calling for this evil angel to fly over him that it signified suicide. This would make sense since a few other BB songs contain suicide themes. I also took the verses to mean that this person tried to be part of a church or was searching for fulfillment through the church and was disillusioned with how false everyone seemed. Then the singer had one answer to the pain- suicide. The last line: "Why can't I breath evil angel?" almost seems to denote confusion at the very end due to oxygen deprevation (hanged himself at the end, maybe). I always thought this song was just about suicide, but it didn't dawn on me until recently that this song seemed to have religious undertones. Christians like myself should listen to more songs like this to remind them how their actions really affect others. |
