I love this song! This band needs more fans... This song is fairly simple to explain. It's a reference to the Belmonts of the video game series Castlevania, about a family of vampire killers charged with the task of killing Dracula every 100 years. Unfortunately, I haven't played any of these games to know if the reference goes any deeper than that. Otherwise... I believe the song is about a couple who regularly fight vampires, the minions of Dracula, but the chorus hints that the speaker may have been turned. It would make sense that he would try to comfort his wife if, say, he were bitten; she would probably be startled and a bit upset once they met again - hence parts of the chorus telling her to "calm down", "be careful", remember her training and "say a prayer" for him. The second part he notes that they must hunt separately, and it would make sense if she's to hunt vampires while he needs to hunt for blood. It seems through their love for each other they split up without incident, but they know if they ever meet up again she should use her training well. |

It sort of sounds like the speaker is dead and the song is taking place at his funeral. He doesn't want to leave her alone in the living, he can't move on, and is struggeling with the notion of "saving her" - whether she should die to be with him or live without him. Obviously, not all of the lyrics fit this idea, but that's my first impression. |

Let me just say that I'm not really into Incubus, but this has become one of my favourite songs. I believe that he's singing about finding his match, his one true love; "I picture your face at the back of my eyes, a fire in the attic, a proof of the prize" means that he can picture her so vividly in his mind and that gives him the proof to believe that she must be out there somewhere. Being alone for so long has broken him down, made him lonely, and so he tells her to "persist", to try to find him. The part "Wait... There is a light..." is seemingly where he finds her, he doesn't care how or why, he just wants her to stay. Now the video suggests mostly the same thing... I think the dead girl shown would be his one true love, but being dead and all... Well, that would just mean that he would never meet her and would stay lonely for the rest of his life. In the video he sings as if she were alive, still searching for her, but he doesn't realize that he's singing to no one. I find this makes the song a little heartbreaking, really. I mean, if you believe in the "one true love" ideal, then what would happen if they were killed and you never met? NOW, I believe this is where the "anomaly" comes in. Since we can't have a sad ending, the girl goes against logic and revives - maybe she heard the desperate song, or maybe love is bringing them together (awww....) Just kidding. In any case, I do love this song, and the video is really insightful. :) Happy reviewing. |
