"One man washed ashore on an empty beach" may refer to "Operation Mincemeat". Where the body of a Welsh homeless man was used to deceive the Germans that an Allied landing was due in Greece and not Sicily. Thus, reducing casualties during the actual amphibious assault. |

My thoughts ... I'd always thought this song was about someone contemplating suicide and finding reason not to.
As to why, well there's a lot of religious references here especially the altar. As in Altar Boy, and I'll leave it there. |

@[Daoist:47110] I agree with your analysis. It is a really smutty song if you want to think about it that way. Some additional thoughts.
Dance is often used as a euphemism for sex. This song takes things a bit further with references to groove and rhythm. This implies a steady and prolonged act to bring the woman to climax. This guy knows exactly what he's doing.
References to Hendrix and Purple Haze imply the sexual experience is being enhanced - or enabled (for anal sex) - with drugs.
Horton Hears a Who is definitely a reference to her vocalisation during orgasm.
There are several references to food and eating, which of course, references oral sex.
Finally, I'm fairly sure the final rap implies this song provides the ideal rhythm to dance to. |

@[yurig:33404] London was the hub and nerve centre of the British Empire. We plundered the the riches flowed back to London like a golden river.
As some others have said this is also a rebuttal to Gordon Brown's sale of some of Britain's gold reserve. He was criticised for selling too much, too soon and therefore deflating the price.
However, I would also take that line to refer to the privatisation (sale) of many national industries that started under Thatcher's era - she sold the majority - and continued through to the present time. Similarly, Thatcher has been criticised for selling off the public institutions that the British relied on for little or no again for the majority.
Another neat observation of our national decline.

@[yurig:33403] I'd say it's a reference to the roses of the Houses of York and Lancaster that vied for the throne of England. Ultimately the House of Tudor prevailed, the last monarch of that dynasty being Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I's reign is considered to be a golden age of England that saw the birth of the British Empire. It also links to our present time through the current monarch Elizabeth II whom has reigned over the subsequent decline of the empire.
In the title alone we're being asked to consider the rise and fall of the British Empire and the influence of the monarchy over our history and culture.

Just realized Charles Thompson was singing about a priest (preachy-preach?) molesting him circa 1992. We all know now, about the Catholic priests that were sexual deviants. |

Isn't this a swipe at certain types of fans and their choices in music? By extension a criticism consumer habits. |

Excellent song.
If this relationship is over, then why does she even meet the guy? Maybe there is some small and last chance of redemption, but we'll never know for sure. |

Hmm, not so sure the meaning of this song is what it appears to be.
If I were to take "gun" to be a euphemism for "penis", then the chorus has an entirely different meaning to the obvious. Then coupled with the idea that "In Bloom" is a reference to a girl's flower or her virginity, then this song is all about sex. But then if I were to carry this train of thought through then what does "sell the kids for food" mean? Surely not about under-age sex or worse or paedophilia? "He's the one who likes all the pretty songs" suddenly has a very sinister meaning. |

Seems to me that here is a guy that is debating whether to give in to his girlfriend's pressure to make a commitment (marriage?) and would rather not think about it i.e pick from the choices he's been given. He'd rather just go with the flow and see what happens. The wider aspect of the song suggests that this is a philosophy that applies to most of his life. |

Well, this song is a little opened ended in its lyrics, could be hetro-sexual or otherwise.
The video to this song clearly shows the two women in this song are singing to each other. |

This is why Kurt was such a genius. His songs have many layers to their meaning, even if he didn't intend them. Many of his songs, also, have multiple subjects which makes tying any kind of meaning to them very hard.
Kurt was notorious for changing lyrics from one performance to another and it is obvious that he was choosing words and phrases that could be deliberatly be swapped and/or misheard depending on how he sang them or how they are heard.
I have never considered the possibility of this song refering to prostitution before. It wouldn't be the only song where Kurt alludes to it. |

Theres maybe a little more than just an expression of eternal love with this song. Some lines like 'I won't walk away again', 'I will wait for you right here' & 'Can you hear me calling' suggest that the love is not reciprical, or in the past, or they are apart. Either way she is say that the love is eternal, there won't be anyone else and the love will still be there if/when the other person returns to her. |

An alternative interpretation of this song I sometimes use is as a father wondering what the hell has happened to his teen daughter. She has gone off the rails and he can still remember her as an innocent child. |

Just a thought, but "I live my life by the moon ..." may be a reference to the woman's monthly cycles and how it affects her abilty to be sexually active.
Or how it affects her desire and motivation to go out and find her man/love, frequently referenced in this song. |
