my faaavourite bob marley song, possibly my favourite song ever 2. as an indigenous maori of AOTEAROA new zealand, this song speaks volumes to me about oppression and liberation. he is reflecting on the wrongs done to his people, black slaves being taken to jamaica, which relates to countries like usa and brazil etc....then about the destruction of their culture, and then finally to the people themselves redeeming themselves, freeing themselves. because it is not up to the opressor to free the opressed, that can only be done by the opressed themselves. In our Maori society it is an anthem, that we must build our own futures,on our own terms, recognize that we have been wronged, but rise above it and redeeem ourselves:) |

first of all, some of the people on this message board sound way too certain that they KNOW what this song is about, i think only Bob and probably the wailers or whoever was around him at the time will fully understand what he meant by it, however as with any great song, it is open for different interpretations Its beautiful to see all the different opinions and the different emotions that the lyrics bring out in each individual. In my own personal opinion, i believe that the words no woman no cry are a metaphor for being strong, i saw others comment how he could be talking to a woman and yeh tht makes sense, but i had another theory 2. that when he says no woman no cry he kinda mean- if you dont have a woman then dont cry about it, as if to say- if you dont have a car then dont cry about it, or if things arent going your way then dont let it get you down. To me, he is saying that no matter what bad thing has happened to you, you have got to push on through....COZ EVERY LITLE THING IS GONNA BE ALRIGHT:) ONE LOVE, JAH BLESS....MAURI ORA!!! DIHA |
