Līve – Deep Enough Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song, too! It cracks me up, but at the same time I love that the jilted lover gets to basically say "now see what you're missing out on?" It's a basic human emotion when someone leaves you that you want them to regret it at some point and I love that this song addresses that emotion in a way that is sexy and humorous and in your face without being offensive. Well, at least not offensive to me, but I'm sure offensive to someone . . . who needs to get laid. LOL! Ooops, sorry, did I say that in my outside voice? ;-)

Speaking of being offensive, I'm sure I'll piss off some feminist or uptight chick somewhere when I say that if this song is autobiographical at all and he really did nail his ex in the club with her new boyfriend hanging about somewhere, then all I have to say is: "Dude - studman - score - high five." LMAO!

Even though the song addresses the anger and jealousy of rejection and the desire to lash out at the person who hurt you, I love that it also diverges just enough to give you a glimpse of the insecurity and inadequacy that is aroused by the rejection as well -- "what did I do? what did I say? that gave you away; tell me what didn't I do, what didn't I say; that sent you away from me."

Great song. Provocative. Love it.

Līve – The River Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, I’m gonna take this post and make a meandering sort of left turn from everyone else’s take on this song. My take on this song is that it was written about the birth of one of his daughters.

“It came without warning; A love like I aint never felt before; She's like my destiny calling; And she's lying there all naked on the floor” -- until you have kids you don’t truly understand the concept of ultimate and unconditional love; it’s a life changing experience and usually in ways you don’t expect. As far as the naked part - babies love to be naked and no parent can resist letting them enjoy that freedom while they can – but don’t try this at home if it’s a boy – they pee everywhere! Yes, that’s experience talking. LOL!

“Oh baby, let my loving ease your pain; Bring your burning skin to my river once again; I'll give you life; Ooh baby let my loving ease your pain, tonight” -- there’s really no greater feeling than when your baby looks at you like you are their whole world. It is truly unconditional love because to them you are everything and perfect and wonderful and you can see that in their eyes and there’s nothing that will make you feel better and bring you complete and utter joy than the moment when you experience that look. There’s more to “loving” than just sex people. ;-)

“She came without warning; Like an angel come from Heaven in the night; Her kiss makes me tremble; So she pulls me close and she holds me oh so tight” -- babies are notorious for being born when you either least expect it or at a minimum when you’ve had no damn sleep the night before. Babies kisses and hugs rank right up there with all the best things in life. They can make you feel so good you could cry. They say a mother’s kiss can make everything all better. But what they don’t tell you is that a hug or a kiss from a child can do the same. I don't care how sad you are a kiss and a hug from a baby/toddler/child WILL ease your pain.

Sorry folks, the song is not about sex, it’s about babies. But . . . then again . . . if my husband would open his arms, shake his hips like Ed does in the video and sing to me “oh baby, let my loving ease your pain” – well, then it would be about sex – oh yeah, totally. Which leads to babies, so, see, it is about babies. LOL!

On top of the great lyrics and the mesmerizing video (the desert, the sun, the water, those hips!); I also LOVE it musically. My musical taste has always been very diverse, so I can love the uplifting melody of this song equally as much as I do the raw energy found in I Alone. This song is one of the most uplifting I’ve heard in a really long time. It makes me feel so damn good when I hear it. It’s my favorite LIVE song and it’s my phone ringtone, too.

Līve – The Dolphin's Cry Lyrics 18 years ago
After reading all these posts, I don’t know if I understand the song more or less now. LOL! If Ed says it’s about sex on the beach, then it’s about sex on the beach. But I think we all know better than to believe that’s ALL it’s about. Even sex can be used as a metaphor to mean something deeper – the bliss and passion he describes are feelings you can have about sex with the right person, but they are also feelings you can have about life and people and the world around you. If you tie in the line “if you only run for cover, it's just a waste of time” with the video symbolism of the water being a means of renewal or an awakening then you can apply that to life in that if you want to experience life to the fullest, with as much passion as possible and reach that bliss, then you have to face life head on and take what it gives you. You can’t hide from it because then you’re not living it. You know, the same applies to sex if you think about it. Go experience it and live it –have sex on the beach! Just take a blanket and watch out for that sand – they don’t call it sandpaper for nothing. ;-)

My favorite part of the video is after the first wave where the water calms down and everyone stops running and they all look around with relief, but Ed is there beckoning to the water with that wild look as if to say “just wait, it’s not over yet.” And then the big wave comes and even though everyone runs in fear “it’s just a waste of time” because they are overtaken by the wave anyway. In contrast, the band stays put and faces it head on and even though they are overcome by it they are able to get back up and keep going right away. But for the rest of the people, instead of getting up and going on about their business, they all look bewildered and stunned. So if they had stopped running and faced it head on, they would have recovered from it sooner. Life is like that. It’s better if you face your fears and all of life head on so you can see what’s coming at you. You might get knocked over, but you get back up, say “wooooo!” and keep going.

And that’s about as profound as I’m gonna get at 10:30 p.m. LOL!
