Agree. It could be a number of things. His divorce or heroin as someone else said also. Or, something else altogether where we find solace, but where dependency has it's own consequences. Ambiguity is why it's such an amazing song and without Dylan chiming in we'll never quite know. |

This isn't really a correction, but a begging for an answer to a question. I've heard two different versions of this song and it's driving me crazy. It comes down to "Evening shadows..." or "Evening shatters...". On his homepage, it says 'shadows' BUT he's been known to change lyrics after writing a song. Tangled Up In Blue has many versions. Joan Osborne sings "shatters" and Adele sings "shadows" - If you listen to the version on his album "Dylan", I'm 95% sure he says 'shatters'. You can find both all over the web. Anyone else seen this or know?? The meaning to me is a gorgeous love song to someone who's been in a lot of pain, but he loves her like crazy anyway or because of it?? He's there for her. |

I agree with hemanta. I hope an evening letting all of that out to perfect strangers helped you immensely. Some of us read all of it and likely found a little bits of ourselves in your pain. As for song meanings, use your own. That's what the artists normally want and it's usually better. Knowing the real motivation normally isn't as profound for the listener. I do hope life has been kinder to you in recent years. |

I agree this song is stunningly gorgeous. I've always taken it from a man's perspective. "Collared tight" seems to be a reference to the business world that men live in. Sort of automatons to the machine of business where they lose their identities. Also, the line of "I sold my soul, but I woke just the same" seem to go that route too as well as "I'm a free man with no place free to go". He can't get out of the rut of the world that's set up for men. He's afraid he will be stuck there forever never having love in his life (again?). Just a worker bee making it through like a good society man should. Maybe unable to know how he feels anymore and unable to show it. He remembers being young, in love and thought he still had time for it again perhaps, but suddenly he was old and running out of time with the "thought that I was young". Or, he never has had and he thought he'd find it and it's getting too late for it. Still, he's hopeful at the end!
Whatever it totally means, it's one of my favorite Neko songs as well. |

Loved learning about "sweet FA". Think I will have to incorporate the term. As for Ulysses and Joyce, I just found another reason for me to read that book! I've read other Joyce material, but not that one. It's time! Especially knowing that was where "If you see Kay" came from! Ha! |

Echo Chorus - a definition. Song meaning is always personal, but I think it's important to know what an "echo chorus" is historically. The chorus was a huge part of ancient Greek theater. The echoing was part of the physical delivery to make sure the sound traveled in huge theaters. But more importantly it was part of the play and did the following as found on Wikipedia. "The chorus will switch between the roles of "commentator" and "character". When the chorus is acting as a character, they often provide other characters with the insight they need." I think it was this type of chorus that Neko Case referenced in this song. |
