Like many of his records around this time this song is about morrisserys relationship with Marr. Songs such as 'I won't share you' and 'unhappy birthday' are directed toward the same muse. But now he is writing post spilt with half of the most influential partnership of their day. They were still drawn to each other after the split even though it made things 'hard' for morrissey.
