Teenage Fanclub – versimilitude Lyrics 18 years ago
Versimilitude means "the appearance of truth". Why would anyone hate that, as the singer says he does? I've pondered this for years. It's a great song, off a great album, but I've never really figured out why the guy hates the appearance of truth. Actually, when you read the lyrics over, you realise they're pretty rubbish, with some really banal rhymes. And the guy professing to always having said fuck when he thought he could... well, so what?

But I think the clue to the song's meaning lies not in the Oasis-ish platitudes of the verses (which aren't as good as he hopes) but in the chorus. He's saying that rebellion is bollocks, an attitude means little. These things are just on the surface. The act of rebellion is just about trying to be cool - trying to appear "real" (ie. represent "the truth", or appear to do so). Therefore, he hates verisimilitude, because the appearence of truth, of course, is not the truth itself.

Mind you, isn't saying fuck whenever you like it some sort of act of rebellion, and therefore, by his definition, versimilitude?
