Matt Nathanson – Wait Up Lyrics 18 years ago
In the last verse, Nathanson again blends in his value of self-reliance in thought and is critical of those who cannot think for themselves.

Guster – Two at a Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Just to clarify, Guster is Jewish.

The line "do what you're told" serves to remind the souls who did not survive the flood that they were informed of the consequences of not changing their ways beforhand. In this way, the line serves as the 'moral of the story' which may appear self-righteous if viewed out of the context of the song.

Perhaps this point becomes further apparent in the lyrics:
"for those that drowned
it made no sense
they should have known
because he told them so"
