Just to clarify, Guster is Jewish. The line "do what you're told" serves to remind the souls who did not survive the flood that they were informed of the consequences of not changing their ways beforhand. In this way, the line serves as the 'moral of the story' which may appear self-righteous if viewed out of the context of the song. Perhaps this point becomes further apparent in the lyrics: "for those that drowned it made no sense they should have known because he told them so" |
