Matt Nathanson – Angel Lyrics 15 years ago
Correction to my earlier correction:

You sounded so good on the phone,
All moved up and all moved on.
Me and gravity, we never could agree.
I can almost see the sky.
When I need to, I close my eyes.
You're the only thing that's worth holding on to.

Angel, you sing about beautiful things,
And all I want to do is believe.
But I traded my dreams for this mass of memories,
And they just stopped working for me.

I'm not a monster I believe,
Like a liar would believe,
Helps me navigate the wooden smiles, the raging sea.
All my heroes pull their heads,
Like a fighter would I guess.
No one ever really likes getting older.

Angel, you sing about beautiful things,
And all I want to do is believe.
But I traded my dreams for this mass of memories,
And they just stopped working for me.

Matt Nathanson – Answering Machine Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's actually the opposite of what GoDeeper said, though I think his or her analysis was quite good.

I think he is being stubborn, but the fact that he's singing the song, the fact that he wants her to see how great he is, the fact that his new girlfriend is just like his ex all belies that he is not really over her at all.

I sent SongMeanings an email about this one. Wow, so horribly wrong, ha ha. Thank you got Geek_UK for posting the right lyrics!

So I only got here because I clicked on the most recent comment posted on this site. I find it really sad that people are flaming people that like the song or band. Get over yourselves, your opinion is no more valid than that of the people that like this song or band. We all have preferences in music. This type of music isn't my style, but I'm not going to insult people that do like it, because my opinion is no more valid than theirs is. I can guarantee that for every person that hates this genre of music, there's someone else that hates their favourite genre with just as much fervor.

If you think you have the right to criticize someone's taste, you need a few more years of life under your belt to teach you some humility.

Snow Patrol – Take Back the City Lyrics 16 years ago
Anyone care to postulate about the line "it bares its teeth like a light?" I don't get that line.

I agree with what others have said--the 'city' is a metaphor for a relationship that's not going great, but the couple is still in love with each other. I think that the idea of taking back the city means taking control of the relationship and not letting it spiral down.

It's a song that's very relevant to my life right now, I think that's why I've been really into Snow Patrol lately.

I think that "there's no truth at all poking at the giant eyes of ancient gods" should actually be "There's no truth at all poking OUT the giant eyes of ancient gods."

I'm labeling this as an "interpretation" hoping that that means it's interpreting what the words are.

Ha ha ha. Thanks for that. "Talking about how [she] is like an angel." Pfft.

I disagree with you about the "happy lust in your hair" thing though. I think that's a bit too lewd for Gary. But hey, that's just an opinion, it's your right to interpret this song however you want.

Snow Patrol – Shut Your Eyes Lyrics 17 years ago
I do think the end of the line is "at will," but he seems to be saying "our" or maybe "are." Still trying to work the line out. I think Whiterain05 might be right and it's "yeah our secret place at will."

I don't think this song is about sex. I think it's about relying on the love in your life to get through troubled times. I can see how you would read it as being about sex, though. The line "learn to wear each other well" does seem to imply it, but I think that the line is more about being able to be together as a 'unit' well, rather than the petty squabbling that characterizes a lot of relationships.

Good job on the English, it's hard to learn a new language, but I think it's rewarding!

Correction to the lyrics:

"Who was given a seat in the stand" should be "who was given a pat on the back."

I'm not sure where I can post corrections, so I'll post it here.

In the last stanza: "who was given a seat in the stand," should be "who was given a pat on the back."
