You know, I HATE it when people hear a song & robotically think it's about suicide.. but, well.. A few of Regina's songs, I do believe really are about the suicide. & I know that's annoying for a lot of people with different ideas about the meanings of her songs.. But has anyone else noticed?? (like in Hero of the Story, or Apres Moi) Anyway, in 'Open,' it kind of sounds to me like she jumped off of a cliff. The cliff was "down the road & up the hill","through the woods & past the trains.." As she was falling, she was "suspended & open.." Also, "I am (gasp) In a room I've built myself (gasp) Four (gasp) straight walls (gasp) One floor (gasp) One ceiling (gasp)..." Well, doesn't it sound like a casket? & the gasping sounds like she had just landed on her back from a long free fall.. Ever had the breath knocked out of you? Hahah, I still can't explain "wires 'round my fingers" part. Or the verse "Open up you heart, and then In a night, the snow starts falling And everybody stares Through their windows at the streetlights Too beautiful to see" Unless she really fell out of a building, which would contradict everything else I said.. hahah. Anyway, that's my interpretation. Sorry that it's about suicide, lol. |

Luxushexx, you posted your comment in 2005, but I'm responding to you anyway.. your analysis is brilliant. You know, many of Regina's songs are similar to this one - concept wise. I'm so in love with Regina; jeez. |

by maeghan on 03-17-2008 @ 05:06:25 AM This song is almost completely perfect. Nah.It *is* perfect. Yeah, I got the whole Lucifer idea, too. Especially with the gravedigger part, & she's making it out to sound like she's having sex with him.. Also, people have compared Pavlov to Satan. Could Lucille by Lucifer's daughter? ;o) She makes ya' think. Boy, am I in love, or what? |

Yeah, I got the idea that she was instable as well. Very interesting interpretation, xxyulix; I never thought of that. But yeah, when Regina says, "she's never coming home again," I could just tell she meant mentally. Beautiful. |

This song is about a lonely, beautiful woman who lives near the ocean. The woman knows she is beautiful, and may be a little stuck up, or full of herself. "There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes" would justify the fact that she's a little full of herself. Especially when you pay attention to tone of voice and accent Regina says the line in. Right? 'Cause that's the kind of thing one of those kinda women would say to a man. Like, she's begging him to stare into her pretty eyes. Haha, yeaah.. & it's clear that she is probably "one of those kinda women" throughout the song when she mentions how she has the perfect body and such. And she really likes her eyes. Oh & what I meant by one of "those kinda women" was; not necessarily a white-trash kind of woman; but more like one of those chain-cigarette-smoking, high school dropout, man/sex-crazed, women who just happen to be very beautiful and perfect. & KNOW that they are. & they think they're some kind of sex-goddess and very desirable. You know the kind. We all know one. And maybe the guy she is going for isn't as much into her as she expects/wants him to be. ...& just to make myself sounds even weirder, I get the feeling that this song may be set in the mid/late-70's, for some reason. Or maybe that the woman is from that time period.. Go figure. My interpretations of Regina Spektor songs are always pretty out there, indeed, hahah. Boy, I do love her. |
