This song gets overlooked because it is on the much-maligned "Self Portrait" album, but I think it is one of Dylan's most passionate songs, a simple pastoral poem of a love song. |

I really think this is one of Dylan's best songs. It's certainly one of the saddest songs I've ever heard; there's just something so devastating about it. It seems clear to me that it's about someone who is very lonely and depressed and who feels that their life is meaningless.
The story about the Passion of the Christ soundtrack is interesting. I can see some Christ parallels, although that wouldn't be how I would interpret it. |

I'm no Dylan expert, and I certainly can't analyze every line, but I'm pretty sure it's about Dylan's switch from "protest songs" to simpler folk songs. The album this is on is called "Another Side of Bob Dylan," and this song emphasizes that title. Dylan looks back at the romantic style of his earlier works, and sort of scoffs at that. "'Equality,'" I spoke the word as if a wedding vow;" "Good and bad, I define these terms, Quite clear, no doubt, somehow;" etc. |
