Rah Rah – My Guarantee Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pleasantly surprised to see that someone else discovered this band. They're incredible, funny, catchy, and still manage poignant lyrics. I love Rah Rah, and especially this particular song. It's just so sweet and charming.
Ah, Canadian indie is the best.

The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics 16 years ago
I totally agree. I'm taking way too much liberty with this, but I think of the cradle of clay like half the urn broken off from the rest facing upward in a cradle type shape. Or maybe just the urn in general. There's too much there to say that there's no possible connection between the characters. It would just be so Decemberists-y to throw in a twist that's not really explained publically.

The Good Life – Don't Make Love So Hard Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems like everyone has the same basic idea of what's going on, and I agree. I love this song so much. A lot of people can relate to it, and it's just really beautiful, both lyrically and instrumentally.

The Weakerthans – Plea from a Cat Named Virtute Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I agree it's about death.

"...if you don't stop the self-defeating lies you've been repeating since the day you brought me home"

That line makes me think the owner bought the cat as a sort of replacement for the person who died. They may also blame themself for this death what with the self-defeating lies and all. I love this song and spent a lot of time listening to it. Just my take.

Cursive – A Gentleman Caller Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't see the misogynist aspect. I see it as a girl who finds out her husband/boyfriend/lover/whatever is cheating on her, and she wants revenge. She cheats on him and wakes up in the morning regretting it terribly.

Whatever you need to make you feel
Like you've been the one behind the wheel

That part is reiterating the fact that she needed to feel like it was her in control of the situation, not the person cheating on her. He cheated on her, so he had the control. I don't know if that makes sense, but that's what I hear. This song is amazing and beautiful and really nice to listen to. Is it weird that I find it a bit uplifting?

Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's the desperation that gets me. I felt like it was about obsessive love. Someone who was so in love and so broken by it that they constantly compared themself with that person's new love.

"And I settled for a telephone
Sang into your machine:
"You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine,"

That's amazing imagery. I can basically see him in the phone booth. This sounds really stupid, but I see it as a sort of flashback from him thinking about what led up to him on the bathroom floor. Just kind of a journey type thing to him killing himself perhaps?

I don't know. I could be completely off base, but everytime I hear it, this little movie plays in my head, all grey and black and amazing.

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics 18 years ago
I love love love this song and NMH in general.
There's a definite creepy factor, for lack of a better term, and I think that's what makes it so haunting and memorable.
