I've watched the video of that, and I really don't see why everyone thought Dylan 'won' that. Personally, I was more impressed with Donovan, although I love both artists about equally. This song is pretty face-value. It's a really sweet song. |

As everyone's said--it's about Ritalin, they said so themselves. but i just thought i'd add a bit to it--i take ritalin (aka Vitamin R--i call it that, actually, to the girl who sells it to me and around people i don't want to know) out of prescription, so i'm kind of... drawn to this song. THe Atomic Punk: "I'm not sure if you can actually get high off of Ritalin, but if you can, then you're dulled down and you probably could feel like floating on air." yes, you can. for me, though, i only actually got high the first time. i was completely giddy and hyper and could barely... um... i don't know, stay inside myself, if that makes sense. it was an amazing feeling--i was fucking THRILLED about everything. if you had told me my parents had died i would've taken it with a huge grin and been running around cheering, even though i love them to death. after that first time, though, it kind of... i don't get strong 'bad' emotions like sadness or anger when i'm on it, and i concentrate really well. by the way--Vitamin R is a legit thing for this song to be called, because in the world of... 'underground' ritalin, so to speak, that's what it means. just to clear that up for some people. again to THe Atomic Punk: "This line also seemed to me like it could be a marijuana reference. You know, passing hits on a joint. But this probably just meaning drug dealing with Ritalin, you can pick and choose which meds you want, or you can distribute it to profit off of other people's addiction." yeah, i'd interpret it as ritalin dealing. i get my Rs from a friend of mine who has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD (i don't remember which) for years. she basically chooses which to take, how many to take, how many to sell, etc. i'm constantly at her mercy, cos i don't have much money and ritalin generally goes for $5 per pill, so she's always choosing if she'll let me have, say, 5 for $20 instead of $5 for $25. and finally, Evil_Ducky_Lord--ritalin is definitely not a way of keeping people from thinking for themselves. it doesn't do that for me, anyway. |

i always thought it was 'erratic on heavy metal' as well. i don't think it's about love--not "real" love. i think it tends towards infatuation, a summer-fling type thing: a fast, intense relationship that happens against all odds, ignoring all differences, just unconditional love for a while... and then it ends. to me, that's the end it's talking about in the song. |

this song is bloody gorgeous. anyway: this is probably somewhat irrelevant at this point but i agree with Bonavox--it's probably crystal meth... especially given that in the lyrics it SAYS crystal meth in the line "in our crystal meth tuxedos". mostly, i second rachael.'s theory. i'm not entirely sure if agent orange really plays into it beyond the title, though i could just be crazy. to me, personally, though, it's a song about enjoying things (love and life) under the influence of anything that makes it prettier. not so deep as it probably actually is, just a simple thing. that's just what it is to me, though. |
