I think what this song is saying is that you spend your life ashamed of who you are. And you spend your time hoping that you can be someone else, but that person you become will ultimately disappoint you in the long run. Don't live as your told to live. This is your life, your only life to live and you should live it how you would like to spend it. Without the influence of the others telling you to change. Your too afraid your going to fuck up so you hold back from what you really should or could become. This is by far my favorite song by modest mouse |

This song is very compelling and his voice is so peaceful that you just want to listen all day to this one song. Its hard to dignify what he's saying. But in the first stanza i think he's saying that, have these tortured days passed you slowly. And that when they finally figured it all out it was too late. And he's still left there as she reaches for higher and better things to do and she gets carried away and leaves him behind. I'm pretty sure the chorus is saying what happens if we end up back together. You can't stop and pretend everything's alright, but it's too awkward to say anything of the sort. So he's lost and he's hoping he can find an answer. And by the rest of the song i think he's saying he has so much faith and hope in this person, but he has nothing to back it up. He's wtached her leave him many times but he still tries to earn her love even though he can't realize that he needs to move on. |

| I went through a time when i took full comprehension to this song. And i think its just about how she wants so miserably that someone to understand and for someone to always be there. But she knows deep down that no matter how she tries to explain herself nobody can comprehend what shes saying. And i think she's been let down so many times shes afraid to trust anybody else because shes such a deep and complex person. | |

This song is basiclly a sad break-up song. In the lines "The path is clear to follow through I stood too long in the way of the door" i think she feels as if she was igsignificant to him. She was just some girl in the way of his path and i think she needs or wants something far more than that. And with him she can't find that so they have to seperate even though she doesn't want to. Fiona Apple is one of the most meaningful artists i know |
