It's cool that everyone has an interpretation...but...come out to California in early spring...drive up the pacifc coast highway from husrt castle to big sur and you will know this song...It's one of the mos amazing coastal landscapes in the world...and utterly peaceful...I proposed to my wife right of the pch at dusk...with the setting sun spreading it's light across the ocean...literally with a pod of dolphins swimming nearby...it's truly about escaping from L.A. and finding some of the worlds most beautiful nature only a few hours away from the insanity that is Hollywood... |

I go with Tim Leary...He had a message to bring to people...think of it what you may...not just turn on, tune in, and drop out...but the idea rethinking reality and society...and he was basically beat down and imprisoned for it..but he kept coming back...
but you can apply this to many great thinkers who suffered for their vision...Ghandi, King, and perhaps even Jesus come to mind...though I know Eddie is not a jesus type... |

This song has so much meaning to me too...and you can't quite put a finger on it's true meaning because M.Stipe made it very personal...but I always felt it was basically...This world is a big scary place, but when I pull back from it, into my comfort zone, and you are there (loved one) we can grow old together and be truly in love...the love that sees you to you dying breath...not infatuation or romance...thus the crickets...it reminds me of a cool spring Georgia twighlight, with an iced tea and your significant others head resting on your lap...and for a minute you can eviscerate your memory and just...be... |

Consider this...leave metaphor behind...this fits with with the somewhat death obsessed lyrics of DCFC. This person likes the thrill of the chase, of new love and the conquest of love...but when he finally catches her "she stopped running months ago", he no longer feels the thrill and starts wishing for escape from the mundane and banality of commitment...and in an extreme move, he burns his home/apartment with all his stuff in it...including his girlfriend...
after all, his heart is an "empty room"...
So this song works so well as metaphor, but actually may be meant as a pretty Fu**ed up song about a Fu**ed up person... |
