I think it's a love story. Gone awry, clearly. I interpret it as.. The girl was, in fact, in love with the boy. And I think the feelings were requited. However, there is something he will not do for her. For example, let's say it's a long distance relationship, and he won't come to her: "You're a rock, I'm a gull" A rock meaning, he stays put. And her being a gull, and a changer, she will ultimately move on from him. I don't believe either are detached from one another as some people here have offered. Just the line 'Might be okay to stay if you could hold me' suggests that she'd be content with staying in one place if he was with her, in that place. |
