Everyone's done a great job covering the overall message of the song; I just wanted to mention that when she says that the city lights say "We don't need your kind," it makes me think of conflict between humans and technology, like the city lights are gaining the upper hand. And that all goes back to the song Deep Blue, with the computer beating the human in a chess match.
I'm not getting how this ties into the suburbs though... it seems very anti-suburban. |

| Arcade Fire – Deep Blue Lyrics

I had the weirdest experience with this song today... I was driving my dad someplace and had the new album on in my car (as I have had for the past couple of days of course) when he randomly started talking about chess and Kasparov being beaten by Deep Blue, which I had never heard of. And then I was like, "Wait! I think there's a song on this album called Deep Blue..." And I went ahead a few tracks and it was there! Strangest coincidence ever. More proof that my iPod has the capability to take over the world...
That's what it was, the moment that computers became smarter than humans (according to one way of measuring intelligence.) I realize I haven't added much to the general interpretation of things but I just had to share this! |

I really, really love this song... it might be my favorite song by Switchfoot, actually. :/ Weird, right?
Well I can definitely see this being really big and existential in meaning, but I also see it being just about two people. Finding your "soulmate" [if you believe in such things] is a once-in-a-lifetime, needle-in-haystack deal. In a way its the multiple interpretations I love about the song. And as always with this band, I adore the music. |

| Goldheart Assembly – Last Decade Lyrics

So, I listen to a lot A LOT of music, and within a week this song easily made it into my top twenty or so favorites of all time; I can't believe it's not more popular. It's just perfect for whatever mood I'm in, and always the first thing I go to when I'm alone in my car and want to play around with singing some great harmonies!
As for the meaning, I don't think I'll be able to pin it down exactly but the images all seem to suggest to me some kind of imminent and unavoidable ending ("dying leaves can grip no more," "when ("when," not if) they spill, they'll wreck these shores," "this is the last decade.") The very calming orchestration though makes me feel like the speaker is very at peace with this inevitability. |

i don't agree with trying to write down english lyrics for this song... first of all, it's not in english, second of all, it's about much more than language. it transcends specific sounds translating into specific meanings, which is all speaking/singing is -- and that's much too stratified for this kind of meaning.
the vocals really are my favorite part of this song though; i think they're the best on the album! they give me abstract senses of feelings rather than words. it makes me think of conflicting ideas meeting all in one person's head, and his desperation in trying to make sense of it all. |

Yeah, I agree that she's already in a relationship with another guy, hence the need for a "meeting place" where they carry on their affair. And I also agree she's the one saying "I'm sorry I met you," because those are the "words he's left with as she turns into the night."
Aside from that, I LOVE this song and everything about the sound, which for some reason I find supremely annoying in 60s/70s films but can't stop listening to in this context!! |

"When I was a girl how the hills of Oconee / Made a seam to hem me in"
... THAT'S WHERE I'M FROM!!!
Oh my goodness, it's just so great to hear it mentioned in a light that has nothing to do with rednecks or stupid government officials, you have no idea! I assume it's talking about Oconee County, SC anyways, because I don't know of any towns in either of the Carolinas with that name. It definitely has hills and mountains, but the thing is, it's not anywhere near the ocean so it doesn't really fit with the "sea-swelled Carolinas" verse; personally I've only been to the beach like twice and this isn't exactly the age of horse and buggy... Maybe it's just referring to the state as a whole. |

It sounds like the KILLERS? Haha, nope, you're hearing The Great Escape without realizing it! I'm not kidding, sing that song over top of this one!! Not a note out of place!! Just start singing "Paper bags and plastic hearts" right along with "Top down in the summer sun," and there's even a similar pause right before you start the choruses, just belt out "Throw it awaaaay!" right along with "I used to be love drunk!" But the best part by FAR is the part where it changes, I don't know in song structure, but it's the part that's different from the verse and chorus: sing "All of the wasted time" over top of "All the time I wasted on you." Is that for real???
This being said, they may be singing the same song, but it's a song I love and I will continue to listen to all versions of it. You keep it up, Boys Like Girls! |

Yes, you're right, you ARE making assumptions; I'm seventeen years old, thank you very much. Not quite your average baby-boomer. And okay, okay, listen to whatever the heck you want, but really, what's the difference between a guy saying this to you in real life and him saying it to you over the radio? I personally see none, it's the same exact words and the disrespect is there either way. I'm no music nazi; I'm not trying to have this guy removed from the radio. I'm just expressing my opinion.
In other notes: yes, 95% of the country music listeners I know are, in fact, drunks; and yes, you are right, my mother didn't raise me at ALL, because she is, in fact, dead.

| Katy Perry – Waking Up in Vegas Lyrics

This song IS a load of shit. I mean, overlooking the fact that she sings like a man, it's poorly written. Every time it gets to the chorus and she tries to rhyme "Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes NOW" with "That's what you get for waking up in VeGAS" (and does she really need that line twice?) I just want to poke my ears out with a pencil! Maybe that's pretty anal of me... I could probably overlook it if it wasn't in the chorus, repeating over and over and over... But nope, she was too lazy to come up with a less-repetitive, better rhyme and as a result this song sounds half-assedly slapped together. Better luck next time, Katy. |

[ugh, those little boxes instead of apostrophes are so freaking annoying... sorry guys. next time i won't put it through ms word first. :P]
as for this song, eh. needtobreathe, i love you guys, but this gospel feel just isn't my favorite! it took quite a long time for "washed by the water" to grow on me, and now it seems like you're taking that success and trying to push it even farther. which makes sense i guess. but i still don't like it!!
here's what i think about christian music: i hate listening to it! i mean, i'm a christian, but i know that the "christian" label on songs immediately turns off so many people who might otherwise be big fans of a band's sound! i think christian bands - correction: bands with christian members - should keep their overall positive, but not necessarily blatantly christian, messages and try to bring that to society at large -- have you heard today's rap music??? these people need help!! songs like "shine on" were great because i could read into it whatever i wanted about God, but other people could see whatever they wanted to as well and still benefit from a great, uplifting song. "signature of divine (yahweh)" on the other hand...
well those are just my thoughts. of course i'll keep listening regardless of whatever they decide to put out on this new album. can't wait!!

I. Am. So. Disgusted. By. This. I couldn't even finish READING the lyrics. How does anyone LISTEN to it? I mean, I understand if you're a guy with no control over himself who really cares about no one but himself and isn't looking to ever be with a REAL girl and isn't looking to ever experience something like LOVE, but if you are a WOMAN who listens to this? You are an embarrassment to our gender. Stand up for yourself, please! Grow a spine and realize that yeah, you ARE beautiful and guess what, that also makes you VALUABLE. YOU ARE NOT JUST ANOTHER PIECE OF ASS.
I know I that am not just another piece of ass, at least. But as for you, it's your life. And yeah, this may just be a stupid song and maybe I AM overreacting, but all I'm saying is that if you are a woman and have within you the ability to sit through this without cringing, your lifestyle has eroded your sense of self-esteem and basic concept of who you are. And no one without those two things can POSSIBLY live a happy and fulfilled life. And you know you're not happy or fulfilled, don't you? I hate sitting here knowing that my sisters are out there living like that, when all they have to do is TURN OFF THE RAP and wake up to the wonderful, strong women they are.
TO THE WRITER OF THIS SONG: "I WISH I COULD" TELL YOU TO FUCK OFF PERSONALLY AND TO YOUR FACE, YOU DISGUSTING PIG. I HOPE YOUR MOTHER IS INCLUDED IN YOUR TO-DO LIST -- "EVERY GIRL IN THE WORLD." UGH. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HER FOR RAISING YOU TO LACK ANY SENSE OF REGARD FOR OTHER HUMAN BEINGS AND SHE SHOULD BE EVEN MORE ASHAMED OF YOU.
Thanks. I feel better now. |

| Cute Is What We Aim For – Loser Lyrics
|
Whoa now, I didn't expect to see so many opinions here that were all different from mine. Well that's great!
So - let me preface this with the fact that I AM a Christian but I like this song anyway; it's actually my favorite.
Parts of it were about morality and the afterlife, yes, but I like to look at it entirely in terms of Fate, or in this case, "God's Plan." If God DOES have a plan for everyone ("a man up in a room/ who can control everything I do") then it means that some of us must simply be DESTINED to be "losers" all our lives. And hey, it may come as no surprise to you that that, in fact, sucks!
So, if you consider yourself a loser and feel stuck in a life that you wouldn't have chosen for yourself, then don't choose it! Shake off the influence and go make your own destiny. I mean, what Christian wouldn't agree with that? I guess the only difference here with me is that I try to do it WITH God rather than trying to bring him down, and that leaves me kind of conflicted sometimes, if you couldn't tell.
[... the other equally plausible interpretation of the song being that Christians remain losers until they wake up and accept the absence of God. But that kind of name-calling is pretty immature, so I'm going to compliment the band by sticking to my musings upon fate and destiny. ;)] |

as for why coldplay would have any interest in french history, i'm coming up short on ideas, but here's this enlightening tidbit of art history which you can thank me for later:
the painting on the album cover is 'liberty leading the people' and was painted after the july revolution in france, and the french flag was first used in the revolution about thirty years prior.
SO i just saw a connection between that and the Reign of Terror and consequently the name of the latter half of this song, and even if this connection exists only in my overanalyzing imagination i'm okay with that because i like the contrast of the two names, terror into love. |

This song absolutely stopped me in my tracks, it's so good. Well, it also had something to do with the fact that there was this random chick singing instead of my dear Tyson and I had to check to see if my iPod was on the fritz... but no, it was just the sound of genius.
Having the girl sing with him adds a whole new level to the argumentative nature of the song; it's about two people who love each other but have made some mistakes or something and are having difficulties working everything out.
The Utmost Source of All Wisdom [wikipedia] has informed me that the other artist is a folk duo of two sisters named The Pierces. |

I think pregnancy is too big an issue to slip all undercovered-ly into this song- I agree with the person who said it was just about her being forbidden.

Of course, everything means what you want it to, but I think if they were trying to write a song specifically about leaving a girlfriend behind there would be other things for them to say. (No, I don't know what "things" and don't feel like coming up with any right now, just... a different tone, I suppose.) Instead there's verses about trying to stay in line, getting buried in this place - that's all parenty-stuff to me. Grr, angsty.

I haven't ever been a real hardcore Keane fan and I'll probably get ripped up for liking this song, but there's something discordant about the sound that is really fun to listen to.
But the COOLEST part of the song is that the music actually goes with the lyrics - it spirals! The riff itself along with his voice is cyclical, and then the tension gets really high with the "Did you wanna be?" segment before it winds down at the end.
I just think that's awesome. It definitely has more depth than your average pop song, so don't trash it. |
