I think this song is the ultimate ode to a dysfunctional relationship. They have great sex, they fight, they role play ("dress me up in women's clothes"), he tries to get away from her, she tracks him down...& it always ends up the same way, with them getting back together. I think it's wonderful. |

I've always heard the song has religious meaning - Prince has always been spiritual. I've heard 2 theories:
1) When the world ends, the red blood of sinners against a purple sky will look line purple rain (red & blue make purple). He doesn't want the friend to be one of the sinner - he wants to lead her to God, so she'll be in the purple rain waiting for God to take her to heaven.
2) "Bathed in the blood of Christ" - Christ's red blood against a blue sky will look like purple rain. He wants the friend to be "save" through Christ. |
