Trespassers William – Sparrow Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a little confusing, but only to a point. Either this person is coming back into an old relationship after leaving another ("if the you i have is different"), or is leaving this current relationship for a new one. One thing to note is that although the person may be bringing a blank slate into a new relationship, it doesn't mean the slate hasn't been used before. It doesn't even mean it's washed clean - it could still be cloudy grey with the chalkmarks of past love. They fell in love in a complicated way, it seems, pain going in and pain coming out ("love is the knife we pulled out of our backs"). She's used to it, though, the pain love brings, and she understands her old love's situation, bringing a blank slate in, but knowing you've used it before, pretending to be something that you're not - a person without a past.

Trespassers William – Ledge Lyrics 16 years ago
This person that she loves surprises her by persuading her away from loving them. It seems like the relationship might be a bit more struggling than the current situation the song presents, through "you talk me out of everything." All the same, she loves this person, would do anything for this person, even if it means falling out of (or at least, pretending to) love with them. And at the end, she thinks it might be okay. Love sacrificed for love.

Trespassers William – Low Point Lyrics 16 years ago
It's obvious. She's lost the person she was with, whether leaving them herself or she being the dumped party. Either way, she's worried that she might have just permanently lost the best thing that ever happened to her. She doesn't know exactly what she did wrong ("somehow i broke it"), but this is one of the final straws in the hay pile of mistakes she's made ("i only know breaking"). She knows exactly what she wants, though, and it's the person she just lost ("and what i want to lie in" - leading into lie in the sound, I'm assuming).

Laura Veirs – July Flame Lyrics 16 years ago
This feels to me like being so infatuated with a summer fling, knowing that it's going to end once the season changes. Perhaps it's someone that she's not actually involved, but someone that she sees from a distance, some who is either obviously out of her league, or someone that she simply feels she cannot obtain - and knowing this hurts her deeply. It's so filled with longing.

Trespassers William – What Of Me Lyrics 17 years ago
It's such a sad and longing song. She clearly loves this guy very much, but is incredibly confused at his distance. She's starting to feel that maybe she'd be better off without him, but is too afraid to let go ("Sometimes we don't ask for what we need.") It's this struggle between the two of them, she trying to figure out who he is, why it's so much different than what she thought it'd be like. At the same time, she innately knows exactly what is happening, and what he is feeling towards her - she knows it's over between them. She's let herself fall apart, she's allowed herself to change in hopes the relationship will stay together, but it's just not working. At the same time, she's basically on her knees, begging him for things to be fixed, for his love to be returned, for him to even just to know her like he used to.

Iron & Wine – Homeward, These Shoes Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about a son leaving home and then returning - perhaps the parable about the Prodigal Son.
The "old road" is being washed away - all the bad things he's done and all the trouble he's been in is being forgotten with his return home. "Shoes worn to paper" stands for all that he's been through in the time he's been gone. It's clearly been a long time. He's looking forward to coming home, back to what he used to know, but at the same time, he's scared and nervous.

This is probably the most ridiculous response I've seen so far for this song.

Iron & Wine – Cattle on Calvary Lyrics 17 years ago
This seems to mean more than just racial discrimination.
The character in the song, "Brown," apparently has lost nearly everything in his life:

"Brown asked the creek why the Lord had to steal
his horse, his house, and his baby."

He's hurt, and so he takes that hurt and turns it into hurting others and blaming Christ for his losses in life - probably effects from his own mistakes. This song obviously has many religious connotations as well, Brown blaming Christ and killing him, perhaps to make himself feel better, in hopes that all his problems will go away.

The mention of "biting through his tongue" could perhaps mean that he innately knows that what he's going is wrong, and he feels guilt about it, although in the end he does it anyway.

Overall, it seems to stand for the hurt he's gone through, and trying to find ways to put the blame on someone else, and in the end being consumed by his grief and guilt.

Iron & Wine – Beneath the Balcony Lyrics 17 years ago
This song has seemed to me to symbolize how seriously messed up this world is.

"...a hero begging change
His sword across his knees

And how he prays to find a man to blame
For every sleepless night he spends
And for every well that he warned me of
But wound up falling in..."

It's an old, crippled, homeless man, who's out on the streets - most likely for the mistakes he's made in the past, that he now warns the boy about. The old man is searching for something to blame, but knows that, in the end, it was mostly his own fault that he is in this predicament.

"...Give to the holy mother begging change
Christ across her knees

And oh, how she prays to find a man to blame
For every loveless night she waits
And for every gun that she frowned upon
But still some fucker made..."

Once again, another (well, possibly) homeless person, a single mother. For mentioning about the gun, I'm assuming perhaps her lover, possibly the father of the child, was shot and killed. She's trying to find someone to blame, just like the old man is/was, but - once again - it's probably her own fault she's in that predicament, for giving her heart out over and over again to jackasses who simply use her and stomp on her heart.

The mention of children - I'm thinking it's two different sets.
There's the

"kids beneath the balcony
Who disregard the rain
To make sure the king won't grant
The dead man one more day"

They're possibly the troublemakers, the hooligans of the streets, who torment the homeless, who are more like them than they probably realize.
And then there's the

"kid beneath the balcony
Behind the garbage can
Who waits for the king to come
And hold his sweating hand."

Most likely a product of child-abuse, now homeless and alone just like the rest of them, just a child wanting to be loved. This "king" has religious overtones, of course, but could also simply be another name for the crippled man. Thinking about it, it might be that all three characters are related - the mother's child is this boy behind the dumpster, who eventually grows up and turns into the crippled old man, because nobody would ever help him.

It's a beautiful song, and one of my favourites. I can't wait to see Sam Beam in November. :]

Iron & Wine – The Sea and the Rhythm Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always interpreted this song to be a representation of the utmost love a person can have for another. They care so very deeply for each other, and it's not just sex - it's lovemaking. He comes to her to provide, with eagerness and curiosity, much like a baby to its mother.

It always reminds me of the one I love, and makes me miss him all the more.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe that this song is about deep sorrow for the loss of a loved one. He is mad and disappointed at God for taking her away, but he knows it was time for her to go; neverthless, it seems like everything is against him, and everything gets taken away from him. The "complications you could do without", from the kiss he gave her, is BECAUSE he kissed her, she knows he loves her, which makes it even harder for her to go ahead and die, knowing that they'll be apart. So she leaves him in that week, and he finds the note of goodbye on Sunday. The next morning she dies, and because he didn't get to say goodbye, he is angry with God.

Sarah Blasko – Sweet November Lyrics 18 years ago
I think she's realizing how much life means to her, and how much she's grateful for the life that she's been given, and for the people that surround her. Perhaps it was about getting over a depression, a mutual depression. Maybe a break-up, that they're both over now.

Most likely something bad happened in the wintertime, but now it's a new year, summer is coming, and they've realized that they have to move on and roll with the punches.

Sarah Blasko – I Could Never Belong To You Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe that she loved him once, that they loved each other very deeply, but their paths split at one point, and she realizes that she doesn't love him anymore. She regrets leaving him, and the memories were sweet, but it's best that they go their separate ways.

She's become a different person, and that's why things are so complicated. She's drifted away from him, and even though he's struggling to keep the relationship together, her heart belongs to him no longer.
