I belive it's about the lost hopes, about being inceasingly more disappointed with one's life (with lost love, with lost friendship, with being disconnected and unfeeling etc). But one at least retains the ability to realise that it shouldn't be like this. |

I think the song is about trying either to live a happy and careless life or to work hard to achieve something. But in the end the death comes and what happened before no longer matters since everyone ends up in a deep and dreamless sleep. |
