@Belle47 To add - it's likely "Andrea Mulrain", the same 'Annie' mentioned in "The Becoming". You can find a few comments in various articles if you do a bit of googling.

@Nollykin I think those parts are more to do with BDSM, tease and denial etc.

@Belle47 If you're huge on NIИ, you'll be interested to know that the 'you' in Pretty Hate Machine is a girl Trent was close to at band camp. She's done an interview, if you want to go digging.

Regarding twist - I bet you were disappointed when you found it! It's just an early, worse version of ringfinger, missing all the atmosphere in the chorus!

The 'I'm so tired' part probably *is* in the song - just sampled and filtered so much, it sounds more like a drum hit or the like, knowing Trent's approach in this album (he sampled a ton of artists, editing the sampled to the point that they were totally unrecogniseable.)

There are similar 'hidden' lyrics in other parts of the album.... Sanctified ("As surely as the blade's course is run, Maybe my kingdom's finally come") and Kinda I want to (I'll take my chance tonight), then there's the lyrics you clearly hear, but people seems to miss, like Terrible Lie's 'I give you everything, my sweet everything'.

It's such a heartwrenching album. Makes you just want to give him a bit hug and ask 'who hurt you?'. I don't think Trent likes that though - he never expected Hate Machine to sell well, so left it personal like a diary. When he realised the audience for his music, he stopped singing so personally about relationships. :)

@SilentSnake While I think you might be putting a few too many specifics into what is probably a more general central metaphor, I completely agree with the overarching premise that the song is about those relationships where people encourage one another's dysfunctions. Good eye!

Sure, it's about a relationship (featuring double-entendres to sex) at a very shallow level, but I suspect it's central theme is a particular type of relationship... One where 2 people push one another towards their dysfunctions. These can be behaviours (like dramatic outbursts/arguments), or even hobbies; but I think more commonly they are shared disorders (anything from self harm/eating disorders, to bipolar) that the two 'egg on' in one another; or perhaps _most_ commonly, drug addiction.

These types of relationship feel massively emotional, and the magnetism is *incredibly* intense, but they tend to have a very negative impact on the lives of those involved, have a short shelf life, and end in disaster.

I believe the video uses a car crash as a metaphor for bringing out the worst habits in one another, ultimately resulting in disaster for both. The reverse timeline of the video might also be a suggestion that they knew what they were getting into.

I absolutely *love* this song, it's a shame it never saw an album and has scarce availability, because it's amongst my favourite NIИ songs. It's grungy baseline is hard not to move to, it's extremely catchy, emotionally impactful, and even witty lyrically (all the references to car crashes; "Help me get through Into you", "All I can do, pushing it through, into you", and especially "We could become Two into one" ! )

The Sisters of Mercy – Ribbons Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh, and of course, 'she looked good in ribbons' refers to both the fact that she was beautiful, and the fact that she's beautiful and lovable even after he's upset her ('cut her up') by killing the relationship.

The line 'she looked good in ribbons' is a double meaning.

Ribbons is about ending a relationship because of intellectual incompatability. Lying on your back thinking of the stars refers to lying in bed at night with your partner, but being unable to share your thoughts.

Flowers on the razor wire is about the fact that while the destruction of the relationship is necessary, there's a lot of lustful attraction there.

'I tried to tell her about Marx and Engel, god and angels' is about wanting to talk about politics, religion, and other weighty topics, while your partner doesn't think on that level, but is beautiful anyway.

'Her eyes were cobalt red, her voice was cobalt blue' means she is an irrational person - seeing red and talking blue (using poor or offensive language).
Purple, on the other hand, is normally seen as a 'royal' colour, or in new-age spirituality it's seen as a 'mystic' colopur - having the highest frequency in the visible spectrum, it also often signifies a deep person....
