| Modest Mouse – God Is an Indian and You're an Asshole Lyrics | 10 years ago |

indians didn't give gifts and take them back later, they had a custom of giving something with the expectation of receiving something in return - it was trading, only a form of trading the europeans weren't accustomed to - and if the indians didn't receive anything, they would take it back. europeans misunderstood the custom and assumed they were being presented with gifts. with that said, the song might not deal with the "indian giver" term. forget the word indian and replace it with natives/aboriginals of any land, and think of the settlers who enountered the natives/aboriginals. the natives/aboriginals were, not in all cases, happy to help the settlers by providing food, shelter, clothing, and teaching them how to use the land. as time passed, the settlers wanted more, demanded more, began to take, they brought illnesses and death. eventually, the natives/aboriginals were pushed aside when they were no longer useful, or they were "civilized." one possibility, then, is that god is someone who gave us a means to live/survive, and we, the assholes, are never happy with what we have and demand more. all we do is kill god or use god for things we want and toss god to the side when we're done. "get on your horse and ride" is another way of saying "fuck off." |

| Pinback – HoHum Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Ho Hum means "boring and dull: routine" according to answers.com. Maybe the "I forget I'm awake" bit could mean his life is the same old routine everyday to the point he feels his life is a dream. He's wasting time just living, he's "caught up in a trap [he] doesn't want to be in no more." His only way out of the trap is to kill himself. | |
| The Books – Take Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The repetition of "Take time" reminds me of "tick-tock". It's like the whole song is a clock, constantly tick-tocking and moving on, and it's all we can do to take the time as it comes and goes because we'll never be able to stop it. We take time as it is; good times and bad. | |
| Pinback – Versailles Lyrics | 18 years ago |

There's also a Palace of Versaille where the king of France, Louis XVI, his wife, Marie Antoinette, and child lived for a time. Louis wanted to rule another part of France as an absolute monarchy and took refuge in the Palace. Then the French Revolution took place and a mob captured Louis, along with his wife and child, while they were asleep. Louis and Marie were forced to walk 12 miles back to Paris, all while being taunted. They were held in prison for three years, after which they executed Louis and Marie. No clue what happened to the child. This song makes more sense, for me, thinking about this situation. The mob travelled to the Palace of Versailles to reclaim their king, only to murder him and his wife - all for a good cause, or not, it's whichever your views are on the scenario; a change did come about, though. I can almost picture the mob, full of fury, marching their way towards the Palace, screaming and yelling, tripping over each other in a passion of excitement, searching for their king. All of this is silent. You can see the anger in their faces and by their lips opening wide, throwing their fists and torches in the air. My point: This song makes the mob's mission seem romantic. |
