that's cool - I definitely wondered the same to myself - the playing off of the guitar and bass really reminded me of the old Morrissey/Marr sound - perhaps an indirect nod to an influence?? also, consider "Back to the old house" kind of the same theme... |

I've only recently considered a more spiritual aspect to this song. For years I've seen the obvious link with nature/Iceland - one can immediately tell that the island depicted is Iceland (geographic outline). Clearly the drama of Iceland's nature is shown visually, but also the beats go along with the volcanic/earthquakes etc... The first lyrics always left me puzzled, until I noticed that she says follow the DOT, and not dots, as we'd expect. I think she is pointing out that we can follow all events back to one common creator source, and that coincidence is a cop out explanation for all the beauty/events/accidents around us. Surely there is a source to all this (makes sense, only with You - you is God, or in Pagan Bjork speak : God as Nature. You don't have to speak, I feel, emotional landscapes. this refers to God's emotions spelled out in landscapes and natural events. all that no one sees...heal deep inside of me: how being at one with Nature/God fixes all. resets her. and finally helps her remember how she is so at the mercy of the Nature's power/God's power: state of emergency. we are all so dependent on being safe from Nature's power. all can be destroyed or taken away in a breath - we are in a state of emergency every moment of our lives, and yet have so much to be grateful for - hence how beautiful to be - beautiful to be at all, to be alive in such a precarious balance of life and death. |

| No comments on this one yet... not a well known song. Although I suspect this is written by Bjork to a general female divinity, eg Gaia or other, I can't help loving it as a hymn to the Mother of Christ, who at once is glorious, and sorrowful. pure and Blessed Virgin Mary. | |

I was surprised to have the same reaction as Lightbulb Sun. Although she seems to have rejected the idea of a Christian God (for now), this song actually is the closest I have heard of hers acknowledging our Fallen nature before God: 2 Corinthians 12:9, "[The Lord] said to me 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." see Mother Heroic too |

hmmm, I also always have felt that this represented some sort of depressive lament, perhaps pouring alll one's time/energy inot a relationship that really will never be but now I wonder if it is like End, on Wish, or 39 , on Bloodflowers - about singing his life. Wringing out every bit of pain for art (howl into this wind = singing???) |
