| On "Is this a matter of worse or of better?" -- To me, this has always felt like the narrator is unsure whether the lack of intimacy in the relationship is a sign of a good thing, and is just how long-term relationships mature; or if it's a sign of a bad thing, and maybe the partner wants out and just isn't saying so. I know I have had similar thoughts in relationships in the past: you become so comfortable with one another that you start taking each other for granted. I think if a relationship continues on long enough, this is somewhat inevitable if the people involved don't actively work against it. I like how this song reserves judgment, though, and merely reinforces the importance of communication. Still makes me break down every time. | |

One of the members of Deep Cotton says in a "behind the music" type interview that I got with my iTunes LP version of the album that the "happy birthdays" were being sung to George Twopointoh (I think he was executive producer for the album or something?), whose birthday it was on the day it was recorded--incidentally, July 16. :) I wondered about them, too! |

| This song is so beautiful and simple; it's unfortunate that it's sort of overlooked, maybe for its very simplicity. I feel like it's really indicative of Michael's spirit and what was most important to him in life. I miss him! Spirits like those are far too rare. | |

| This song speaks to me of a loss of faith, or feeling as though your "higher power" or god has deserted you. The "narrator" seems to be experiencing some difficulty in their life, and wishes to have the support of some deity-like figure to carry her through. | |

This song seems to me to begin with someone the character loves leaving her. Perhaps the fountain is literal, or maybe it's a metaphor for her tears. (I say this because of the "I cry again" at the end of the song.) After the fountain comes the wind, which completely strips her of everything; part of the process of grieving the relationship that was lost. Then the "out of the blue, it is he" part... that could possibly be the beginning of a new relationship that she wasn't expecting in her vulnerable state... and it could be either with someone new, or with the man who left her before, indicating that the relationship is one of those that is a never-ending cycle of contentment and heartbreak. This new relationship seems to fix her, but ultimately doesn't end up working out, as he stays with her for 40 days and then goes away, leaving her alone with her "fountain" of tears again. The part at the end, "on my hill I wait for wind" (which I LOVE), seems to suggest that she's waiting for that next step in this cycle; the wind signifying her being laid bare yet again for another relationship to come along and fix. Overall, I feel like this is a song about someone stuck in a cycle of needing a relationship to feel complete, which is never healthy. It's one of my favorites from Dry, though; it's so passionate and heart-wrenching. |
