Tennis – My Better Self Lyrics 10 years ago
Correct lyrics:

My better self still knows
That meaning comes and goes
What is innate?
I do not know
But meaning comes and it goes

Each and every attempt
A bit of substance spent
Despite the effort I have planned
You seem to lose what I've meant

If I don't use words
Then each sound goes unheard
Utterly senseless without nouns and verbs
Symbols suggest they are fit to possess
A purpose in function
That cannot be met

Those who created know
There is an ebb and flow
Only the value given shows
That meaning comes and goes

My better self still knows
That meaning comes and goes
What is innate?
I do not know
But meaning comes and it goes

If I don't use words
Then each sound goes unheard
Utterly senseless without nouns and verbs
But symbols suggest they are fit to possess
A purpose in function
That cannot be met

If I don't use words
Then each sound goes unheard
Utterly senseless without nouns and verbs
But symbols suggest they are fit to possess
A purpose in function
That cannot be met

My better self still knows
That meaning comes and goes
What is innate?
I do not know
But meaning comes and goes

~Such a cool song. I think it's just about how true meaning is really carried by the things we can't put into words. As she says, we need words to communicate ideas, but in order to understand the real meaning behind those ideas we need to rely on nonverbal symbols and the values that others put on them. That's why we can have miscommunications and the things we say can be taken the wrong way even when we use the right words to say them. It definitely implies some sort of struggle to relate to someone and the frustration of realizing there's no way to get across to that person when they can't understand the meaning behind what you're saying.

Tokyo Police Club – Wait Up (Boots Of Danger) Lyrics 13 years ago
To me it always sounds like "a house with continents inside" which doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I suppose it's close in meaning to what the lyrics sheet says, so maybe that's it

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 13 years ago
"If you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were"

I think that's the main line and the universe-earth thing is just leading up to it. But it's the concept that if you try to progress in a straight line everything will go back to how it was and the world will end as it began.

And of course he's contrasting this to the typical western monotheistic view that you go through life and then die and go to heaven and "shake the eye's hand" and everything just progresses in a straight line like that for ever.

Passion Pit – Little Secrets Lyrics 14 years ago
ha i think it's kinda pathetic that people assume a song about feeling good has to be about drugs

i mean maybe it is about drugs i dunno but he doesn't really mention any drug-specific things. I think wanderingaloud is right, I'd say the song is just about improving who you are and feeling damn good about it. And it's in contrast to how most of our culture is taught to get down on themselves and get stuck in the same patterns their whole lives. The little secrets are just that you can be happy and strong and feel good about yourself which is something most of us don't seem to know.

"oh have you ever felt so goddamn strong
how come it takes some people so damn long"

great line, basically saying it's not that hard to feel strong if you just work at it

Passion Pit – Eyes as Candles Lyrics 14 years ago
hang on, then how come these lyrics say:

"to kingdom come so slightly."

wouldn't that imply they're actually for the song called "to kingdom come"?

i dunno, i'm guessing the song with these lyrics was meant to be called "to kingdom come" but they switched titles for some reason

submissions
Rebelution – Safe and Sound Lyrics 14 years ago
maybe it's just that the lyrics are unintentionally shallow, but i feel like it's a song about escapism, you know just like living life at surface level and not ever going too deep, and the song is almost ironically justifying it, maybe i'm just reading too far into it though...

Bedouin Soundclash – Gyasi Went Home Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's awesome that they made the video with the backstory and everything and it's really cool what the song's about. I also like that they don't really need it because I think the song really speaks for itself in the way it just feels like it's about this great traditional culture and a conflict with something new.

I also agree that they're fantastic in concert, their music just feels so much more powerful live. The problem though is that drunk frat boys seem to love them for some reason and they kindof fuck up the concerts. Also, and I know this is wierd coming from a guy, but I'm amazed (and jealous) by how attractive they all are, lol.

Bedouin Soundclash – 12:59 Lullabye Lyrics 15 years ago
the first line is "It's silent in early morning", also yeah it's "as my guitar waits for a tune" and Lullaby, but that dude didn't have to be a dick about it

I really love this song, I was hoping to find some exact meaning to it but I think you guys are right, it's just about enjoying the beautiful things in life even when there's so much bad stuff going on around

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 15 years ago
when he says "all in all is all we are" it makes me think about how we always judge people's lives and our own as a summary (all in all) of what we've done, but our lives are really about so much more than that

i'd like to think that's how Kurt intended it anyways

Modest Mouse – Dirty Fingernails Lyrics 15 years ago
the thing that this song makes me think about that no one's mentioned yet is like when you know someone and some random little thing about them just bothers you to hell and you can't ignore it, so I always thought maybe he had like a roommate or something that always had dirty fingernails and he just couldn't stop focusing on it and freaking out about it in his mind, but he couldn't say anything about it cause then he would betray how much a ridiculous little thing bothered him

and I don't see why the little kid thing is so bad, maybe he hates little kids cause they always have dirty fingernails

The Strokes – Hard To Explain Lyrics 15 years ago
I think rosa a had a really good interpretation, and it's probably a little confusing to some but I completely get it

I can really relate to this song, I think it's about not being who you try to be and doing things that come naturally because you let yourself do them even though you don't want to.

I say the right things
But act the wrong way

-I think this is because to him his personality when he interacts with people is him as he wants to be so he says all the right things but when it comes to actions he acts upon all of his insecurities and selfishness and apathy and things that he doesn't like about himself. It's like when he says "Pretend to be nice/ So I can be mean" his personality is nice but he does mean things because he feels like it and he lets himself.

But then at the same time he feels there's really nothing he can do about it. Like every time he does something wrong he always feels like he had to act that way, and there's no real reason. It's like rosa a said, like people think they can explain the reasons and he doesn't have any reasons but he just knows that their reasons aren't right. And I agree that it is confusion but really it's like confusion in denial or something, like everything makes sense to him and he knows that everything will be ok, hence the line "I'll make it you see/ I'm ever so pleased". And it's like he tries but just doesn't succeed and ends up being someone who he isn't but who is still a part of him(I know that doesn't make sense but it's true).

I mean I could be wrong about the sort of psychological complex I think this is describing but I think it's the kind of thing where if you really get what he's talking about than you know it really is hard to explain.

Reel Big Fish – Boss Dj (originally By Sublime) Lyrics 15 years ago
I really like the idea of doing a more ska'd up version of this song, but without Bradley's voice I don't think anyone can pull it off. Aaron sounds like he's having fun with it, but what makes the original so great is how Bradley sounds like he's just seriously feeling it. And without that it just sounds a little meaningless and sometimes awkward, especially at the "oowee girl"s. Still a fun cover though.

Jack Johnson – Gone Going (feat. Black Eyed Peas) Lyrics 15 years ago
Why is everyone complaining? The lyrics are right there have you guys read them? I mean really I'm generally not a fan of BEP and I have no problem accusing them of having some shitty worthless songs, but I think they did a great job on this song because they actually didn't ruin the message at all. I don't really like it better than the original but it appeals to a whole different spectrum of people and the meaning stays completely intact so what's so bad about that? And yeah I can see how you could say it's somewhat hypocritical for them to sing about it but that doesn't effect how good the song is. And either way at least it's not like whenever Timbaland's in a song and all he's capable of talking about is bitches and fuckin'. I guess I'm just saying imagine you didn't know it was the black eyed peas, would you still hate it then?

I agree that the piano version of this song is better and I was hoping to find the lyrics to the background vocals here, but oh well. I still have no clue what it means, but that happens with a lot of spoon songs, haha. I really like joylesslove's comment that despite being upbeat the song constantly feels beat down.

Reel Big Fish covered this song i'm pretty sure but it's definitely by the Bosstones, I dunno if the Bosstones ever covered sell out but that's by Reel Big fish

i feel bad adding one more comment to this song but it's just so horrible, I realize you just wanted to help by contributing lyrics but please at least figure out the name of the song first

coincidentally, i'm pretty sure Reel Big Fish titled their cover "Never Had to Knock On Wood" but it's still pretty bad

Bouncing Souls – Say Anything Lyrics 15 years ago
this song is beautiful in it's simplicity and honesty, people always try to live with no regrets but regrets are how you learn and become a better person, and it's hard to admit that we could have made things turn out better, especially when there's no second chance, but we have to accept regrets if we wanna do better the next time a similar situation comes around and do well enough that we don't regret it

Jack Johnson – Holes To Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah I agree, I think it's definitely about when civilization was younger(less developed) rather than when he was younger, and he's talking about how he's somewhat jealous that these people can live and not worry about things like what's in space

Nirvana – Ain't It a Shame (Lead Belly cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought Kurt wrote this song and it's kinda disappointing he didn't but nonetheless it's a great sarcastic song

It's definitely about those types of religious people who are super into religion and act like the perfect worshiper(I think of Flanders from the Simpsons) and yet they secretly do some of the most horrible, immoral things, like the priests that molest little boys

It makes sense this was written by a 40's blues band because these people were probably more abundant in the 40's and in the south

Nirvana – Dumb Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song, the way it fits to my life is just perfect, and I really don't like how everyone tries to relate everything about it to drugs, it could be about drugs but trying to say every line is a drug reference is just dumb, i mean why can't he glue his broken heart back together without huffing the glue? lol. The most likely general meaning is probably what kurt said about it being about easily amused people but someone mentioned that he gave a different meaning in a different interview so he could have just been making stuff up

anyways i just relate to it well because I feel like I generally try to stay positive and optimistic about life in general even though some parts obviously suck. And the fact that i'm always happy around people may seem to others like i'm dumb and don't have emotional problems but really i'm just happy because I don't dwell on them like others do. The bridge (skin the sun...) to me is about dealing with your emotional problems at night so they don't haunt you during the day. I dunno that's how i relate to it anyways

I love this song and the feelings it portrays, and just how poetic and moving it is. It's definitely among my favorite soundclash songs.

I really wish I knew what they were talking about though, since Santa Monica was obviously never attacked by Britain. I want to know what inspired them to write the song and what it means.

Bouncing Souls – The Pizza Song Lyrics 16 years ago
damn I was hoping someone would have an answer for what the walls had seen coming all along

but i think the song is about getting wrapped up in a routine in life and never really getting out and doing what you want to.

"Tony's making slice pies for the lunch rush
Stirring the sauce, pounding out the dough
His brother left town with his girl
She ain't his girl no more"

Tony's brother and girl left because they wanted to get away and he was left behind because he was too afraid to break out and go somewhere, that's how I interpret it anyways.

So yeah I think it's about that and maybe looking back and seeing how the years have passed you by. So maybe what the walls saw coming is that you would realize that you made the mistake of never getting out and doing what you wanted with your life. And they saw it coming because they've seen it happen to many people who worked in the store before.

Anyways such a beautiful song, when I first saw the title I thought it was gonna be a fun song about pizza and then I listened to it and I was like woah, this is deep.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the idea that "kids" is a metaphor for most of humanity and how we do what we want and don't really think about the long term consequences mostly for the environment

I was thinking about the line "a family of trees wanted to be haunted" I'm not sure exactly what they meant by "haunted" but I was thinking maybe they're just saying the forest wants to be old and untouched and left alone with only memories and hauntings, but that's just a guess and it probably goes deeper than that

i think it is about a long distance relationships, unless someone knows about him ever being in jail

i'd like to see more interpretation about what the specific lyrics are actually saying though

Spoon – The Way We Get By Lyrics 16 years ago
Just some things I wanted to add:

first, some comments are sort of debating whether the lifestyle that the song is about is being described as good or bad, but I think the words "that's just the way we get by" are meant to carry the implication in themselves that it's neither a good nor a bad lifestyle, it's simply the way they live and it works so it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of it

also, to devastator who said "just because they mention pot doesn't mean they are stoners", well i really doubt they'd say they get high 3 times in a song if they didn't smoke regularly, but i don't think weed is the focus of the song or even a very important part of its message, it's simply a prime example and constant part of their lifestyle, which, as i said, they aren't glorifying or showing the evils of but simply describing as the premise of the song

ps: I personally don't mind crappy mainstream shows like the OC showcasing good music like spoon. Although I have much more respect for anyone that discovers spoon themselves and not through the OC, at least those that discover it through the OC aren't just listening to the mainstream rap shit on most of the radio. And while some would argue that it doesn't matter what they listen to and that they are dragging good music into a teeny bopper hell hole, I prefer the less cynical (but possibly overly hopeful) belief that truly good music retains it's dignity and integrity (it's goodness) no matter who listens to it and the music's message will wear off at least a little on to anyone that listens to it, even someone that watches the OC

Jamie T – Calm Down Dearest Lyrics 16 years ago
the meaning i've always gotten from this song is like when you have some big problem on your mind and you get drunk to try to forget about it, but even though it works for the most part the shitty feeling keeps coming back to you which is like the chorus
i dunno but when he says:
I've sedated hatred I've sedated pages
I've sedated worthwhile cages stages and all of my rage
it sort of suggests that he's getting drunk to forget his problems
and i think maybe the chorus is like him talking to himself but that's a theory i just came up with so i dunno

PS I love the sound clip after the song on the cd
"Yeah you're cool, Twat! Fucking cunts doing wheelies on bikes, man. I just wanna fucking run um over."
