what if 'belt' means his voice. He wouldn't sell the songs he belts out, to industry so they showed him their business cards and carted him off. |

| Say Anything – Chia-Like, I Shall Grow Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I agree with thekid2006 that this song probably is about Beowulf. Say Anything are self proclaimed history buffs and I can imagine they would read a book as influential as Beowulf. Plus alot of the points thekid2006 said about Beowulf seem to fit in with what the song is about. Max feels like an outcast he sits in his room alot, he sees all his friends succeeding in their lives because they just went to school and got jobs. Max is somewhat bitter that they have sold out on what they liked to do. As he sits in his room he becomes increasingly bitter. The thing I think is really cool about using a chia pet as his metaphor is that chia pets grow so easily. You just water them and they're ready to sit on your window. As far as the stars thing I thing this is a combination of his thoughts on fate, and destiny, it's so right in front of him/out of reach. Also I have stars I put on my ceiling at home when I was a little kid and I've been wanting to take them down for years but never got around it it. I see it as a metaphor for childhood or innocence. Maybe it's like he had these dreams when he was a little kid, and now, he sees how horrible everything's come out. And looking up at those stars they're almost mockingly staring back. 'the stars still scar my ceiling' |

man this song is one of my new favorites by them. I actually didn't like it the first time I got really into the album. But now that I learned the lyrics better I can create a really strong visual from this song. I just see Max sitting in his room stoned and working on music or something artistic and just being very reclusive 'in his cave' as he says again in the album. Also I just see him flirting with random girls and just playing the stupid games we all play. He's not calling her back immediately, he's teasing her a little. It's a web, the masterplan we all follow. 'I'm growing legs' can be interpretted pretty sexually to. And obviously so can 'crawl inside her'. He's basically just comparing his actions to a spider's. What I personally find really interesting about this song is I hate spiders, so the idea of me turning into a spider means turning into the very thing I'm most afraid of. He hates that he's become this, he even critizes himself, at the end of the song he briefly reflects on that. There is another version of this song where at the end the lyrics are: I am too afraid to dig you, I can't find the words to speak, If I could I'd talk so good, that you, would be, with me i am cool too cool to call you far too stoned to leave my bed i'll write this song to win your kiss but stay asleep instead I like the extended version alot better. |

| Say Anything – The Writhing South Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think this song is parrelleling sex to being in the music industry. Some of the lyrics some of you guys were talking about earlier. "Burn me, turn me down" and "last $12 to spend on you" sound like they're music industry refrences, however, I also think he's telling a story about as he moved into the city to become a musician he meets this girl who is basically the next 'girl who's pride makes her hard to forget' He's hitting on her at a bar and he's got $12 left to buy booze and spend on her to try to convince her to sleep with him. He wants to watch her 'writhe'. Max is basically telling a really standard one night stand story in the most insane way possible. He's basically comparing us to him in this story. We puruse around CDs stores and websites looking for the next thing to entertain us. We don't care what or who it is, if they're not attractive to us we move on, sometimes we don't even pay for it. Max Bemis is a genius |

| Say Anything – Plea (feat. Hayley Williams & Kenny Vasoli) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This is the perfect ending for an album like this. It appears that Max and his girlfriend are back together, possibly married or having moved to another town to get away from their problems. but from the sound of max's girlfriend she is not very convinced. Max and her will really have to work to get themselves back on stable ground. The music at the end is so suspensful and then just climatic and wonderful. This is one of the best songs on the album. Easily. And such a Say Anything ending, they don't live happily ever after, but they life together ever after. They work through their problems now, they've stopped running away from their problems they will face them together. Ironically they did this by running away from their old lives. Have they really changed? I'd like to hope so. |

| Say Anything – Goodbye Young Tutor, You've Now Outgrown Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Max flat out lays all his feelings for his ex out on the table. He loves her, he'll never be happy without her, etc. He feels unusually vulnerable doing this and toward the end of the song he is almost begging her to take him back this song serves as an apology and proposal for them to start going out again. | |
| Say Anything – Have at Thee! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| In this song Max becomes everything he hated about his ex. He is superficial and more concerned with going to clubs and meeting random girls, then having a meaningful relationship. He will soon understand why his ex acted that way. And he's starting to forgive her. | |
| Say Anything – Have at Thee! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I feel like Max has just fought with his ex for the first time after they've had sex and he's beating himself up because now that he has a clear head he doesn't want to go right back down the same path he just escaped from. So he goes out with his friends to find new girls, but can't stop thinking about his ex. The next morning is the hangover song | |
| Say Anything – Spores Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I feel like in 'you're the waker...' Max started seeing his ex-girlfriend. They were a little flirty and remembered why the loved eachother in the first place. They were really fighting with those urges and now they get back together in this song | |
| Say Anything – About Falling (feat. Matt Skiba & Laura Kirsch) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
this is probably my favorite song on the album. Max has given up on his girlfriend for now. He's gotten his shit together and he's almost disturbed by how well his life is going by himself. He is scared to admit what it might mean, but...he doesn't really even care if he's alone now. i don’t really even care if i’m alone now and i don’t really give a damn about falling in love body burdened by my heavy heart of stone now and i don’t really even care if i’m alone now Water is a common emotional symbol and Max parallels his last relationship with Noah's Ark. An out of control storm that destroyed his world. He has no desire to dive back in the water after that. |

| Say Anything – The Word You Wield Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this song is about how he is obsessing over the fact that him and his girlfriend have OFFICIALLY stop being a part of each others lives. At the beginning of the song You’ve got nowhere to go but up To where you’ll dine with foreign kings This message is more or less being told to him by his friends and the people around him. He's better off without her, and his life is about to turn around. However, he can't forget about her and all he can do is replay the last encounter they had together. He feels defeated. |

| Say Anything – Spay Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think that after Max cheated on her in 'people like you..' they decided to see other people, but as is usually the case that works out better for her then for him. She starts sleeping with a bunch of different guys. And he calls her out on it and says she's easy. She freaks out and reminds him that he cheated on HER. And that they aren't exclusive anymore. So he yells at her and basically says he doesn't want to see her anymore and storms out. As he's leaving his concious says 'what did I just do' and he geniunly feels empty and horrible for what he has just done. However, to cope with it he blocks out these feelings and goes out to get shit faced. |

| Say Anything – People Like You Are Why People Like Me Exist Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this song is about Max cheating on his girlfriend and rather than apologizing he angrily justifies his actions and they break up. Mostly though I think this song is about cause and effect, they're definitely using some historical and literal references to stress that point. In the scarlet letter Hester's adultry ITSELF isn't really isn't the story, the story is about what actions caused her to do that, it justifies her actions. The part at the end kind confuses me we see right through you a persons not more than a thing the day his insides cease to sting get on your gloves and take the ring vacate your throne, unholy king of kings I kinda feel that this part of the song is her saying 'well no shit idiot everyone deals with temptation, everyone deals with urges you're dead when those go away. Vacate your throne, unholy king of kings. I feel like she's kicking him out of their place and mocking him. But I could be wrong |

| Say Anything – Retarded in Love (feat. Casey Prestwood, Chris Carrabba & Michael Auerbach) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think it's about Max being in love with a girl who he is friends with. She doesn't know that he loves her until the end of the song when he says Because... Falling in love... Could be the first thing Falling in love... Could be the worst thing Falling in love... There's no rehearsing Retarded in love... At this point I feel like she likes him alot too but they're not sure where their relationship will go, they are on unfamiliar ground and they're afraid this could potentially destroy their friendship. |

| Say Anything – Surgically Removing the Tracking Device (feat. Adam Lazzara & Fred Mascherino) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

"if i were the keys then where would i be?" probably my favorite lyric on the entire album I love how Say Anything can make the most mundane statements such powerful emotional points in their songs |
