The Offspring – One Fine Day Lyrics 12 years ago
"The problem with irony and satire is the dumb motherfuckers don't get it."
-Ray Wylie Hubbard

That being said, I really enjoy this song's message non-satirically. Running around blowing up cars and getting drunk is something that's really fun to listen to a song about, even if it's not something I'd like to do in real life.

Five Finger Death Punch – The Pride Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about FFDP, and metal itself, entering into the mainstream.

The song lists pop culture icons, then comes in with:

>I am what you fear most, //All American
>I am what you need, //Living the dream
>I am what you made me, //What you fear most
>I am the American dream. //Anarchy

Some metal fans don't like the idea of metal becoming mainstream, exactly what FFDP has done (what you fear most). But arguably, something is to be gained from going mainstream (what you need). And FFDP is only popular because of all the metal fans that listen to them (what you made me). Metal is entering mainstream culture, and FFDP has its part in that (the American dream).

The second time this verse comes along, it mostly repeats what was introduced before, but the last line subverts what they'd said earlier. Despite being a part of the mainstream, they are still themselves. Being a part of the mainstream does not mean being homogenized.

Look at the list they present in the song. How are things like Mickey Mouse, Eastwood, and Tupac related other than being a part of American pop culture? The anarchy line deconstructs the myth that in order to be popular, you must be the same as everything else that's popular.

>I'm not selling out, I'm buying in!

FFDP didn't have to change who they were to earn their popularity, and they aren't going to spurn it just because some popular things are superficial.

>I will not be forgotten, this is my time to shine.
>I've got the scars to prove it. Only the strong survive!
>I'm not afraid of dying, everyone has their time.
>I've never favored weakness. Welcome to the pride!

They aren't going to throw away their fame. They earned it; they deserve it. They know they won't be the hot thing forever, but for now they'll enjoy the spotlight. And maybe one day people will see them in the same light that they see Johnny Cash, and PBR, Jack Daniels, Nascar, Facebook, Myspace, iPod, Bill Gates, Smith and Wesson, NRA, Firewater, Pale Face, Dimebag, Tupac, Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Disneyland, White House, JFK, and Mickey Mouse, John Wayne, Springsteen, Eastwood, James Dean, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Playboy, Text me, NFL, NBA, Brett Favre, King James.

Dark Tranquillity – Format C: For Cortex Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is about watching somebody becoming jaded. This person is being exposed to negative things, and it changes them. In the end of the song, the narrator pleas with this person:

"Just show me a brand new mind
Keep in what you left behind

Something has got to give
These things I just don't want you to be"

This seems to be asking the subject of the song not to let the negative aspects of life change him for the worse. 'Keep in what you left behind,' makes me think of somebody who gave something to people, whether happiness or hope, or whatever, but is losing it in himself. 'These things I just don't want you to be,' is the narrator telling the subject that he doesn't want him to change into the things that he's seen, heard, learned, etc.

I wrote up a giant explanation full of specifics, relating excerpts to my thoughts, and investigating the ambiguity of certain lines, including the title. Then I accidentally clicked on the Ringtone link, causing my entire post to get gibbed. Woe is me.

The gist of it is that I think this song is about a person who has, seeing the challenge involved, failed to achieve their dreams. The narrator is telling that person to buck up and do the work necessary to live their life how they always wanted to.

I think this is a song about somebody who is unhappy, and wants more in their life. To do this, though, he would have to expand as a person. He must accept their shortcomings, face his fears, and leave his comfort zone to do this. He is apprehensive of this, so he tries to convince himself that he really is happy with what he has. He's struggling between the lie he's set up for himself, the unhappiness of his current life, and the difficulty of taking action to improve his life.

Dark Tranquillity – Empty Me Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song means something very different now. I think it's somebody who has been neglected or abused by somebody they needed the love of, and it led to hatred for that person. The neglectful person eventually realizes the mistake they made, and goes to the protagonist of the song. The protagonist has too much spite for this person, however, and cannot accept any sort of apology. In anger, he lashes out.

"What night never abandoned
In shallow darkness dwell
The evidence in pools of black
Light cannot penetrate"

The opening is about how the protagonist never gave up on his anger toward the person (What night never abandoned). He feels the need to justify his hatred, so he forgets about the times that person was good to him, and dwells only on the neglect and abuse he suffered (In shallow darkness dwell/The evidence in pools of black/Light cannot penetrate).

"Have you come for my forgiveness?
There's nothing left to give
No response to your repentance
This empty me"

The chorus is about the protagonists refusal to accept the person's apology(Have you come for my forgiveness//No response to your repentance). The protagonist has been so damaged by the neglect and/or abuse that he feels there is nothing left to his relationship with the person. (There's nothing left to give//This empty me)

"Lifted from the living days
To be bent right out of shape
Let blades and satisfires
Cut and lick these wounds
In reversal of repentance
This bastard son of lies
To bring meaning to it all"

This expands on the protagonist twisting his memories to justify his hate for the person. (Lifted from the living days/To be bent right out of shape//cut and lick these wounds). He can't accept that the person realized their mistake. He's demonized this person, because he doesn't want to believe that the pain he suffered could have been caused by somebody who loves him. (This bastard son of lies/to bring meaning to it all).

"Take now from this body
A coward's heart
And a soul beyond repair
Empty me

Between insecurity and reason
Self deprecation as a means to the end
Out of reach but never closer
A cure that searches for the cause
Cause of chaos"

This is about the cowardice of the protagonist. He doesn't want to admit that he's been wrong about the person this whole time (A coward's heart\Between insecurity and reason). He does not accept the person's love or repentance, and turns away what he's always needed most: the love of that person. (Empty Me\Self deprecation as a means to the end). Because he will not accept his mistake, as the person did, he will never know how to undo the damage, as he will never accept that he himself is responsible. (Out of reach but never closer/A curse that searches for the cause).

"Drawn from memories the fragments linger
On ages of thought and seconds of sleep
What is it here that tempts the night
To stab the day and kill the light "

The protagonist remembers the neglect of the person, but not the love of the person. (Drawn from memories the fragments linger) He has dwelt on these moments of pain a long time, but has not been critical about his recollection of them (On ages of thought and seconds of sleep). Unable to accept the person's repentance and love, he responds in the only way possible, and lashes out at the person. (What is it here that tempts the night/To stab the day and kill the light).

Dark Tranquillity – Empty Me Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that this is a song about a personal confrontation between one's ignorance and one's knowledge of themself. The shadow is a part of the unconscious mind which houses fears, shortcomings, and failures. While understanding the shadow can help one to understand themselves, and to consciously combat their fears, it is also dangerous for a person to explore to much of their inner self, as they can see their downfalls clearly when they do this. E.G., here's the opening:

"What night never abandoned
In shallow darkness dwell
The evidence in pools of black
Light cannot penetrate"

The night would represent the shadow as it exists throughout the universe. A sort of embodiment of all of life's downsides, though not really an entity itself. When sentient thought came into existence, reason should logically have prevailed and removed things such as violence, jealousy, and hatred from our world. However, all the negativity in the world could not simply disappear, so it separated itself into each living mind, so that it is not so easy to detect. However, with introspection it is still possible to detect the shadow, and to understand it.

"Lifted from the living days
To be bent right out of shape
Let blades and satisfires
Cut and lick these wounds
In reversal of repentance
This bastard son of lies
To bring meaning to it all"

This is about the discovery of one's own confrontation between the good and evil that exists within yourself, and how they each bring a purpose to the other. Without one, there would be nothing to contrast the other two, and it would exist without a meaning. This is probably the peak of benefit that can be found among introversion.

"Between insecurity and reason
Self deprecation as a means to the end
Out of reach but never closer
A cure that searches for the cause
Cause of chaos"

As the person digs deeper, they begin to understand more, but in turn are riddled with more questions, "Out of reach but never closer." An attempt is made to understand the nature of the shadow in its completeness, but it's more or less pointless: "Cause of chaos."

"Have you come for my forgiveness?
There's nothing left to give
No response to your repentance
This empty me"

The chorus, again, I think is introverted. At this point, the person is beginning to break. In an attempt to understand the shadow in its entirety, s/he found out more than was perhaps meant to be known. S/he tries to forgive himself, but as it say, there's nothing left to give.

"Take now from this body
A coward's heart
And a soul beyond repair
Empty me"

Empty me seems to be different here than in the chorus. The obvious difference is that empty is used as a verb here. However, I think it's also a request, as opposed to a description. The introvert is not being emptied, but rather asking to be emptied. "A coward's heart," which could not bear the weight of the knowledge it was carrying.

"Drawn from memories the fragments linger
On ages of thought and seconds of sleep
What is it here that tempts the night
To stab the day and kill the light "

The mind has a way of removing scarring information from a person's mind. Perhaps not so strong as total amnesia of an event in most cases, but lines will be blurred, and details crossed out. What are left are what could be described as fragments of a memory. The introvert reflects upon the dedication s/he once had to asking a simple question. Lines have been blurred, however, and the introvert has trouble remembering exactly what it was that could tempt the night to stab they day and kill the light. And so it is a topic once again delved into, perhaps ending similarly, perhaps not.

Dark Tranquillity – Fabric Lyrics 17 years ago
Stanne has said that this song is about everything being connected to everything else.

"Fabric is about how lives are intertwined. In other words, it kind of comes from something we wrote about in our early demos and EPs, how the fabric of the universe is connected."

Dark Tranquillity – The Sun Fired Blanks Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a couple that feel they are not perfect for eachother. Because they feel they are not perfect for eachother, they break up and go to find their "soul mate," not realizing that they were eachothers' soulmates, even though they did not fit together perfectly. So they end up with nobody instead of eachother, since they cannot find a person that fits them perfectly. Whether or not they get back together is hard to tell. the last two lines of the first stanza seems to indicate they do, though.

Insomnium – At The Gates Of Sleep Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about giving up and hiding from your problems rather than facing them, and how that never solves anything. Possibly suicide, as you could see here:

"Better it would be to sleep forever
In silent shades of the evernight
Sweet are the dreams in the groves of death"

Death could be, and often is, thought of as sleeping forever, and the grove of death is pretty self-explanatory.

Mudvayne – A World So Cold Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems more like a person that is fed up with how most people view the world -- a cold world. People think the world is such a horrible place, and it sickens the singer, because the world is not actually all that bad. This song is about this 'cold world', and turning away from the people that believe it to be such a bad place. "I don't want to no part of depression or darkness."

It is worth noting that the lyrics are also related to the Cancer birth sign.

Killswitch seems to have left out what is, to me, the important part of that wikipedia entry. Damn the fool who posted that info on wikipedia and not here...

This may represent the concept of non-duality from the Advaita-Vedanta school of thought,in which, it is said that the "truth can only be discovered through silence." All previous tracks can be thought of as comprising everything, or every possible characteristic or manifestation possible within the terms of reality. Thus 12:97:24:99 represents nothing, or that which is beyond all definition or characteristics; the transcendental.

This does have lots of connections to the Zodiac it seems. "The Beast of Heaven," "Constellation disarray." "Sharpest Void" definitely seems to mean space. It seems sort of "Creation vs. Big Bang Theory" to me.

Dark Tranquillity – Inside the Particle Storm Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it's about apocalypse, personally. It seems like the "end of the world." But what if it was the end of the world for not everybody, but a selection of people? Say, around 6 million people.

Personally, I think this is about the holocaust. Particle Storm and Chamber of Dissolution both seem they could be reffering to gas chambers. Poisoned gene of humanity. That could be (From the Nazi viewpoint) Judaism.
