They don't play this song anymore because it was the only thing the crowd ever requested. Radiohead wasn't Radiohead back then. They were "that band who played creep" They basically haven't played anything off of Pablo Honey since The Bends came to popularity.

No name no1 I know it doesnt seem right but im kind of with you. A friend of mine just told me the other day she really likes Elliott and I never knew. It almost made me feel kind of sad because I have been listening to him for so long and havent known any other people that were into him. But i guess for me it's kind of a happy sad :)

Yes, Charlie is his stepfather. The biography "Elliott Smith and the big nothing" goes pretty deeply into this song. It's deffinately written about his stepfather.

I have sort of mixed ideas about this song. but it is deffinately drug inspired. Elliott didnt actually start shooting up until around 2000. You guys should all read "Elliott smith and the big nothing" by benjamin nugent. It will open your eyes to what some of these songs are realy about.

Elliott Smith – Roman Candle Lyrics

I've actually read many reviews and insights on this song. I'm almost positive it's about Elliott's step father Charlie, who was a test pilot for the airforce (often vituperate people) Charlie would often beat Smith and his mother and 2 sisters. It's really sad. I'm pretty sure the halucinating part is refernce to his drug experimentation which started when he was about 15 mainly because of the on going abuse.

I completely agree with MusicGuru and Mon no jigoku. I think if you really try hard enough you could make someone believe that all of Elliott's song's are these sad sort of contrived drug stories. . Elliott Smith once said in a sweedish TV interview after his appearance at the oscers "You can take a picture of new york, and one person looking at it will think it looks really depressing and frightening and someone else will look at it and think about all the fun things you can do in new york. I think songs are kinda' like that..." Elliott did the right thing not selling his soul to the corpratist buisiness mongers. His songs are more pure the way they are. They can never be replicated.
