Has anyone seen the video? Is that Odd Nosdam playing the piano or are my eyes just wrong? If so, then I think it's probably not a song about Clouddead, but rather a song about Reaching Quiet (Yoni and Odd Nosdam's first band) in Reaching Quiet songs they make references to chess, which is why I think Yoni sees his collaboration with Odd Nosdam as a failure. Even though their work together is unbelievable and in some ways better than Why?'s new stuff, it is far less well-known and almost impossible to find. I like Benladen's ideas, but I don't think it's a disgust that Yoni feels post-Reaching Quiet and post-Clouddead...rather, I see it as him moving in separate yet equal directions from all the people he's worked with. He's become something totally distinct from Doseone and Odd Nosdam. |

Shadester...a gun? really? I'll agree that it's not a sad or depressing song, but the whole point of the song is sort of a loving dedication ("I'm lost without you") to a PERSON. the clearest evidence for this is with reference to the name. He says "you're the only proper noun i need" as well as "i still hear your name in wedding bells" he's stalking this girl because he loves her but he doesn't want to be called out as a creep. |

| Why? – The Vowels, Pt. 2 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
uhhhh listen to Reaching Quiet's The Vowels off of In the Shadow of the Living Room the song starts off with a sound clip of Yoni saying: "Somebody paints a wall white with a roller...bright white. Then he shoots his brains out onto it." this song is a continuation of the themes in The Vowels (part 1) which also plays around with the a, e, i, o, u, (why?) and ends with "whoa, why?" repeated over again, then a gunshot. but really, listen to Reaching Quiet (Why's first band with Odd Nosdam) and you'll start to understand some of these themes better. Overall the song is looking back at Yoni's life and questioning what it all means. The line about the calculated birth is a reference to whether or not his parents used astrology to plan his birth, when he says "I'm not" that's a pretty clear indication that he sees his life as somewhat unplanned and spontaneous. |

Anyone know who Anna is? I'm assuming she's the "Anna's Cabin" Anna, but are there any other references to her in other Why songs? |

| Why? – Darla Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Yeah I think it's an ode to a chicken who's about to die simple as that...no need to read too much into it and make it some strange sexual metaphor. He's sad for Darla the chicken and is just letting her know that. |

| Why? – Broken Crow Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This is a Reaching Quiet song off of their album In the Shadow of the Living Room I think it's about Yoni's older brother, Josiah, but there's really no telling it could also be about Doseone (the part about "shadiest show promoters" makes me think that's right) anyway it's "Did they teach you french in New York?" in both versions (In the Shadow and Almost Live...) |

see i totally disagree, i feel like it's yoni talking about doseone or one of the other anticon guys because he specifically mentions "So maybe you could kill me off in one of your songs?" after the confusing girlfriend line. and i'm 99% sure this is from yoni's perspective because he mentions his "half-dead" eyeballs -- yoni has a lazy eye that he mentions in some of his other songs. definitely one of his more sincere sounding songs, which makes me want to believe it's about a strange relationship with another guy. |
