On her website this is what she said the song "play dead" means and why she wrote it:
I'd just written Debut when I was asked to do this song for 'The Young Americans'. I watched the film and wrote 'Play Dead' based on the main character. It was actually fun because the character in the film was suffering and going through hardcore tough times and at the time I was at my happiest. It was quite liberating to sit down after writing a whole album to write from someone else's point of view.
The particular character was pretty fucked up, you know. In the film, he had a girlfriend who just wanted him to be happy and in love and he just couldn't get his head 'round it. It was just me trying to imagine what he would say to her. Things he never actually said to her in the film but things he would have said to her |

I love this movie...i think the movie version of this song is better. It so heart breaking..especially the end when she sings "i just did what i had to do" over and over again....you can feel the pain in her voice. Gives me goosebumps everytime. If you havent seen this movie...i recommend you do!!! |

Like most of you have said...i think this song is about her gettin away from something. Be it drugs or a relationship...that part can go many ways, but whatevss it is..its isnt good and she knows she has to get away. And some how she find the strength to break free from it and walk away. I love this song....it has so much strength in the words. It reminds me of my girlfriend. Before me she was in a abusive relationship with her daughter's father and one day she couldnt take it anymore and she found the strength to leave. and every time i hear this son it reminds me of her especially at the end when her and the little girl are singing together......

I think its funny how people waste their time to come one here and comment about something that they dont like. First of all, i could of swore this was a site to find lyrics and meanings to songs...not to say if you like it or not. If you dont like it...dont listen, but thats messed up that people come on here to put down the artist or their songs just because they dont like it. Im sure you haters out there listen to something the next person dont really like. I think its a great song...i love Mia...she talented and tryin to make a voice for her people, and she actually has something real to say. Not crap like alot of the music thats out here nowadays. Yea not everyone is gonna like it but that dont mean it ok to disrespect it. Thanks for all the people who came on this site with their theories, interpretations and meanings about the song so others can get a better understanding of what shes tryin to say.
