Tim Minchin – You Grew On Me Lyrics 16 years ago
this is made all the more beautiful because of how amusing the metaphor is... in principle, at least. i stopped laughing after the first verse and then i kinda had a half-smile/pain in my chest.

genius, man.

Robert Pattinson – I Was Broken Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty sure this was written by Marcus Foster. I have a live version (might be the only cover version he does); it is absolutely stunning. LOVE his voice. Hated him in Twilight, but then I heard him sing and well... I still think he should stop acting, but now I can justify it by saying he should be a full-time musician.

Fav. song off the new album. Meaning is obvious... @lovexhatexburn: hope that's true. it's pretty disturbing otherwise. I love how this song feels so... close to being out of control - like it's bordering on being this total mess, but manages to just stay tame enough to be a brilliant track.

Eminem – Fack Lyrics 16 years ago
^ that's interesting slipthps.
I've taken this song to be more social commentary than some perverse joke.
It pretty aptly sums up the state of human perception towards this sort of stuff in current media.
There is so much emphasis on sex that it's almost omnipresent.

As for the actual song, it makes me feel physically sick towards the end, but I love the deep bassy groove thing.

While it may have just been the "most terrible song" he could possibly make, I still think it can be taken as a broader reflection on society.

Counting Crows – I Wish I Was A Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
okay, my use of past/present tense there was atrocious. and i meant to say that the 'i wish i was a girl' isn't a literal thing. it's just to prove a point.

and i missed out the 'a' in 'he was a girl'.

fudge.

Counting Crows – I Wish I Was A Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
Um, Idk.
From what I read earlier today, I've got a different meaning from it.
Apparently Adam copped a lot about being 'whiny' and stuff in his songs, when he was really depressed and suffering from something medical.

For me, this is about how he wishes he was girl so people would believe him when he says he's miserable - people don't really associate guys with being sad all the time (hey, not my view).

People kept telling him nothing was wrong and to cheer up, life isn't that bad, etc. and he wished there wasn't anything wrong, but there was.

It hits me most in the opening lines and the chorus. I may be wrong (most likely am), but that's just what hits me personally.

I disagree. This song is great.
The meaning is kinda obvious.

^ It's on the Japanese version of Fevers and Mirrors.
I know it's not about this, but the song makes me think of the Holocaust for some reason.

Cool song.
Anyone else think it sounds a heap like a Modest Mouse song?
I can't recall the exact name of it, but it's on the 'Good News for People Who Love Bad News' album.
I hate to call it unoriginal, but it feels that way.
A very fun track though.

Currently my fav. track off the album, along with another one or two.
I'm not too clear on the meaning... I need to read up a bit on some of the references.

probably some of the greatest words i've ever read.

Do you think that there is a reason behind why each verse feels disjointed and a separate idea?

I'm just wondering if there's any specific message being portrayed through that...

meh. Great song though.

Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová – Leave Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree with raffish.

I think the vocals are incredible. they are so raw, and you can tell he means everything he sings.

I love this song. I love the soundtrack to 'once' in its entirety. I don't know if this song was on any albums before that, I feel ignorant not knowing though.

Cartel – Save Us Lyrics 18 years ago
Are you kidding me?

What's so great about this song? Lyrics are lackluster at best... they barely flow and they have no punch whatsoever. Okay, so the singer shows 'emotion' when he sings them... but no amount of emotion excuses poor lyrics.

The singing isn't even that good. The melody is really off at some points...

I think the best element of this song is the piano, and when I first heard this song it still brought to my mind the image of some half decent myspace band home recording.

That said, each to their own, I just don't really see how 'fucking amazing' this song is.

And if this is the best song these guys have, I'll be sure to steer clear of them in the future.

Please, no one take offense to this. I'm just expressing an opinion, if listening to monkeys banging drums pleases you, then listen to it. If listening to the rain tapping on a tin roof appeals to you, listen to it.

Whatever makes you happy... this just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 18 years ago
The varying opinions on this song are really interesting. I think the way you percieve this song relies on your own personal experiences. This song came to me at a time where I really was struggling with my feelings towards someone who I knew deep down I couldn't have, but I kept convincing myself there was something there.

But I'd rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery.

For me, these lines represent someone telling the person they love - someone who is obviously extremely distant in the way they reciprocate their feelings, or someone who just seems unreachable in terms of accepting your feelings towards them, that while you love them, you're sick of waiting for them to suddenly fall in love with you back. It's saying that they'd [in a way] rather settle for second best, and settle for a decent relationship with someone that feels something towards them too. Yet it tells me at the same time, that while he says that, he doesn't mean it, he's sorta trying to convince himself that he's better off without her. He'll never give up and he'll never move on - as enforced further by the next few lines.

Besides, maybe this time is different
I mean, I really think you like me.

This hits me so much, and they way I intepret it, it couldn't describe me much better. I take it as - even straight after he's said that he wants to find someone else to settle with, he's convincing himself - even if against his will, that there IS a chance, and that she DOES feel something towards him, she is just too shy or whatever to say. Whether that's really the case remains to be seen.

That's just how the song explains itself to me. I think all the explanations are really good, and as I said before, what you get out of this song is really what you've gotten out of life.
