Elastica – Stutter Lyrics 11 years ago
Pretty much this is about Justine and Damon's relationship - he was cheating on her with groupies, so would come home and not want sex with her. This is from her perspective wondering why he's not into her. She revealed this all in an interview I read after they split up. Just like 'Never Here' was about her relationship with Brett Anderson

Travis – Side Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about the reality of life for me, the kind of things that Buddhism talks about. Your thoughts aren't reality (there is no wrong, there is no right) and we're all the same consciousness (we all will live, we all will die) and ultimately how all our troubles are insignificant. I think it's a fantastic, spiritual (whatever that means) song.

"You've caught me at a bad time, so why don't you fuck off" What a great lyric!

New Order – Regret Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a song about being a rock star, and comparing it with a simple, mundane life. It's about where Bernie was at the time. That's what I think anyway. And it's a TUNE!

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle Lyrics 17 years ago
I read an interview with Peter Hook that said this song was about a "sexy vicar" i.e. the triangle was between the vicar, a woman, and god. No idea if that's true or not but it's an interesting interpretation of the song.

Pet Shop Boys – Yesterday, When I Was Mad Lyrics 17 years ago
Nope, Bobby O was their producer before even Please, their manager was Tom Watkins, but either way this song is about the press and the people working in it, after their first proper tour (before Very).

The verses are the insincere comments from the press "Of course it's all on tape, but no one will find out" The pre-chorus and chorus is Neil's response "I smiled with murder on my mind" and then his personal thoughts "Admitting I don't believe in anyone's sincerity, and that's what really got to me"

And then, the dénouement is the ending coda "Then, when I was lonely, I thought again and changed my mind..."

A really well written song that starts as bitchy as hell and ends really sweet, and contains some of their best music, probably their most energetic and powerful with Always on My Mind a very close second.

R.E.M. – Disturbance At The Heron House Lyrics 17 years ago
I read that this song was about a competition run by someone to find the next band from Athens, so you had loads of wannabes meeting at the place they mentioned. People were forming bands on the spot, hence "hirelings" etc. Not sure it's actually about protests

R.E.M. – Departure Lyrics 17 years ago
Aye, touring. Apparently they flew from Singapore to San Sebastian (Spain) on the Monstor tour (via SLC it seems). When they arrived it was hailing and the Basque separatists were bombing the town and it was on fire in places, and the song references that chaos.

R.E.M. – Circus Envy Lyrics 17 years ago
Yep this is about jealousy in particular and insecurity in general. There was a time in my life when I TOTALLY related to this song. "Here comes that awful feeling again" - indeed. Jelousy is bad kids, don't do it. ;o)

R.E.M. – Can't Get There From Here Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a fairly random song with lots of references to the band and people around it like Jefferson Holt. The title and chorus is a phrase that Michael used to say when people would ask him directions "Um, you can't get there from here" which, if you think about it, is impossible. Apparently he was bad at finding his way around, so was probably the worst person to ask directions from. That's why you have Mike in the background saying "I've been there I know the way".

R.E.M. – Animal Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah it's "humans are animals" and, I think, a reference to quantum physics changing our perception of reality, yet at the same time we're still animals, so the meaning of quantum physics is fairly irrelevant. So you have "I'm vibrating at the speed of light" (as is everything) and "Tell me I'm a tourist in the fourth dimension" leading to "So what's the big deal? I'm an animal." Whatever, the song rocks ;o)

R.E.M. – You Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about Stipe's relationship with River Phoenix apparently. "Did I dream you were a tourist, in the Arizona sun?" is a typically oblique reference from Stipe. The album (Monster) is dedicated to him as well.

Radiohead – Up on the Ladder Lyrics 18 years ago
OK the lyrics are definitely wrong here, just listened to the 93 feet east recording on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq2i-0qaGg8) the first verse definitely contains references to the Tardis (from Doctor Who) and hyperspace, and a motorcade for that matter. All those references are about seeing things from a distance, much like being up on a ladder (see how that connects?!?!?!) and in my opinion the song is about Tony Blair (much like You and Whose Army?) hence the line "You let your people down" and "You're all the fucking same" Macaque has the right lyrics
