I can't help but laugh, because i was named Shallott. I never did like it, and now I have a reason not to. I understand how the Lady felt, because sometimes I feel like I've been trapped in a tower of my own. I think the song says that we all follow routine, and do what we're supposed to, until someone or something comes along that makes us screw ourselves over.

I will agree partly with Thesaya on this one. It does seem to fit the story of Rose Red overall. There's also the fairytale Snow White and Rose Red, where they were sisters, both named after two rose trees their mother had: one white and one red. During the winter, a black bear came to them and stayed all winter. During the summer he went away to guard his treasure, to keep the dwarves from stealing it. So Rose Red and Snow White have some misadventures with a dwarf, whom they keep finding in trouble and keep saving, and eventually find out he's been stealing from the black bear. Eventually, the bear kills the dwarf, and it breaks the spell on him, changing him into a prince. He married Snow White, but the tale never mentions what happened to Rose Red. Maybe some of it refers to how Rose Red must have wanted to find a husband of her own, adding more to the story in doing so.

I think the ghost is supposed to symbolize the lack of empathetic and compassionate men. When she says "But when I'm stuck in conversation with stuffed shirts whose adoration hurts my ears", she's saying that she's surrounded by men with over-inflated egos, and that the only man who is perfect for her is dead. That's another possibility too. That she's haunted by her dead lover or husband, who was the perfect man, and she can't find his equal.

She's saying that all the pretty girls are not taken seriously, and are basically preyed upon by all men. This is true, in a sense, for I've found that the average male is usually fixed on looks, and not cleverness. There are few men out there anymore who will look past the outside. Sometimes it seems the only place we girls can ever find "Mr.Right" is in romance novels and fairy tales.

I think this song could be dedicated to those who keep waiting to find someone to love. You have to 'sing loud and clear' for someone to notice you, and not be afraid to do it.

All the men who approach her are selfish, only taking and not giving. And maybe she's getting bored with being approached by the same kind of man over and over again, and the man she's talking about's intentions are clear. When she says to pray for her, it's like she's daring whomever's listening to feel pity for her, but that's not what she wants. And when she says "I'll kill you first", maybe she's planning to hurt this man before he can hurt her.
