Future Islands – Swept Inside Lyrics 14 years ago
By the shattered coals of another's arms
or swept inside like the rosary
that fell away when your girlish chums
cried out to take on motherhood.

Wolf Parade – Two Men in New Tuxedos Lyrics 15 years ago
With supposedly two albums worth of material, it is fucking mind boggling that this made it on to the album. Terrible song.

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 15 years ago
Now I'm starting to think the slit purse is just referring to making money.

Why? – Even the Good Wood Gone Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah mang, it's definitely rod. Why would one's remaining fingers curl around the memory of Ra? That doesn't make any sense. Also, if it is Ra, then he'd be saying, "... around the memory of a Ra." You can clearly hear an "a" before the word in question.

Wolf Parade – Cloud Shadow on the Mountain Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's, "you're gonna be okay come morning find your legs and find your horns..."

Why? – By Torpedo or Crohn's Lyrics 16 years ago
So it turns out Yoni really does have Crohn's disease. I did not know that.

Why? – Into the Shadows of My Embrace Lyrics 16 years ago
Kind of obvious, but the last section references the song Dream On Cortelyou from Oaklandazulasylum.

Why? – I Need a Little Time Lyrics 16 years ago
Best song Yoni ever wrote. I guess some of the credit goes to Legendary and Blake.

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 16 years ago
To elaborate, he's saying if he's fucked a few girls, he can't bitch about dying. He also uses body mapping in reference to death in By Torpedo Or Crohns ("will they map my skull and wrap my bones when my wig is gone, hmmm?").

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a reference to sex. Think about it.

submissions
Why? – Against Me Lyrics 16 years ago
In the solo live version he did, you can clearly tell he says scythe.

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm hearing that now too.

Why? – Even the Good Wood Gone Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty sure it's "remaining fingers curled around the memory of a rod." He even alludes to this later in the song when he says "left hand gripping hockey stick or cattle prod," as if one day his remaining fingers will curl the same way."

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty sure the first part is:

"Lately down in a hearse back is where my new best look is at
if I slit a purse or two then I can't curse
if my cake is cooked and my nerve veins are mapped."

Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics 16 years ago
In the Bible, characters are usually introduced by saying who his father was, like "Abraham, son of Isaac, son of Jacob, son of so and so." I think that is what Yoni is referring to here.

Sanddollars = what you get one you blow coke through a dollar bill?

"High on pot I let my stare go soft but pretend it's not."

cLOUDDEAD – Jimmy Breeze (Side A) Lyrics 18 years ago
Just found out that the 8 bit sounding part is from the Goonies 2 NES game, based off the Cyndi Lauper song from the movie. So awesome.

Why? – Good Friday Lyrics 18 years ago
Some more possible corrections:

"Eating pussy for new fans"

"Missing Mel at a Motel 6."

submissions
Why? – Good Friday Lyrics 18 years ago
Correction: "06' I say the Friday before Easter was not GOOD, I cried to myself in the pisser" - hence the name of the song.

I don't know Yoni, maybe it's time to get over this girl. You already wrote one album about her. Only kidding, this song is awesome, although I think the opening line is kind of stupid.

Subtle – The Ends Lyrics 18 years ago
The part where the beat boxing hits is incredible.

The Hold Steady – Stevie Nix Lyrics 18 years ago
"I was half dead" could be a subtle reference to "Half Dead and Dynamite," the second Lifter Puller album. He says it a lot.

Why? – Crushed Bones Lyrics 18 years ago
In this live version I have, he says:

"I'd trade my sister for a fingertip of blow
back then I'd have sold my single for a thimble dip of snow"

He prefaces the song by saying it's the first one on the new album, so I would imagine it had already been recorded (this was before EE had been released). I wonder why he didn't stick with that line.

RIght now there's an add for cocaine drug tests on this page. Coincidence?

Why? – Light Leaves Lyrics 18 years ago
The last line of this song is so incredible.

submissions
Why? – Fall Saddles Lyrics 18 years ago
That is really interesting, especially when you consider the way "Fall Saddles" sounds like "False Idols" when he says it.

Why? – A Sky for Shoeing Horses Under Lyrics 18 years ago
That first line is so perfect. This was one of the songs I was most excited for on the new album.

Some possible corrections:

"Kings fall to pawns, he dropped the needle let the song say it" (goes with the chess line later on)

"But the room's rules bend and the staff will make you laugh"

"When I'm eyed I tongue my bottom teeth" (when someone is staring at him)

"Swap meet brown 31 fishnet hat cocked to the right" (he got the hat at a swap meet)

Here's a great video of this song, maybe even better than the album version:
