During the concert that I attended, Daniel Cavanagh (who wrote this song) said it was about his parents. The person speaking in this song is his mother, whose life was broken by the father who abused alcohol. And she forgave him over and over again, but it did not stop him from drinking and making her life miserable. That's all.

How come almost no one comments on it ? Yea , lyrics are easy to understand but so many stories can be told. Mine is : after 5 years of marriage , me not supporting my wife in hard times and my wife not giving me enough love,knowing that she is with me only because of children I experienced SOMETHING , and I changed , fell in love with her again like never before ... only to learn that recently she has had a verbal affair with a guy , didn`t cheat on me and I know she won`t but it hurts so much. When I still didn`t know about him I wrote her a letter with the lyrics of this song apart from last 4 lines ... and now when I now I can add those last 4 lines...she broke my heart , but I can`t say "thank you". Amazing song , makes me cry...

So listen to a guy from Poland (the land of the bravest people in the world by the way , the only country that stood against the Nazis in 1939 (my grandad fought then) when France and England and few others were chickens , well, cool to boast about it here but it`s not the point right now) who graduated from English/American studies. Menifest destiny was in fact believing that the US was a country chosen by God to expand over the land of todays North America. And in believing that a lot of white bastards (am white myself btw) could murder anyone that didn`t want to surrender which means NATIVE AMERICANS. Zach uses too sophisticated English for me to understand all but most of his songs are about how white Europeans mistreated (a mild word for genocide) anyone else who didnt fit because of skin color or lower level of development. I admire US a lot , but you guys have to realize that you are historically ignorant not only to world`s history but also to your own one. Finally , a question , why do you kinda worship Columbus (who also was a murderer of natives) if there are now proofs that the Blacks from Africa reached the shore of America earlier then Columbus did ? Answer yourselves. Anyway , still love your country for Micheal Jordan , Pearl Jam and PRS guitars

7 years ago I travelled thousands miles and met J. She was with someone but he was probably not good enough, she started seeing me - a poor boy from Europe, restless spirit, travelling from place to place...We belonged together, we were the TWO who should walk through life together but I knew I had to come back home ... I was honest and told her that one day I`d be going back home, she was too young to join me, too young to risk new life with the man of her life who couldn`t find his place, whose soul wanted to travel...so she stayed with her boyfriend and stopped seeing me...And when we met after some time I saw that we were maent to be together but there was too much to risk and she gave me this song on CD...did it mean that i was the best she ever had ? ...I eventually came back home. I am married now with grat women I love, have a wonderful daughter...But I`ll never forget J. from Staten Island.I am really happy but sometimes I feel that J. was the best I have ever had. Everytime I hear this song I am thinking of you J. ... and I miss you...B

Simple...real forever friendship, regretting past times when things were so easy, wishing to be immortal... It makes me think about my friends with whom I don`t see as much as I would like to but hope that when we finally settle down we will spend time together again. Great song
