I think that this song is a shot of describing the post-American world. "I used to rule the world" refers to when American's foreign policy will was heeded. As we all know, that is no longer the case. The phrase "now in the morning I sleep alone on the streets I used to own," refers to the fact that Americans are alone in many of their fights and that foreign leaders who used to agree with American policies, now speak outwardly and openly against them. Chris Martin is one of the first to write a song about how the United States is increasingly irrelevant on the world stage. The anger about the direction George W Bush has taken us is gone, and now there is only a feeling of resignation to the inevitable decline of our country. I think that his foresight and take is brilliant. The tone of the song is that of "life moves on." You get the feeling that despite all of our fears about losing power and hegemony, that he accepts that it was his actions that caused the downfall and we have to accept it. Just like we all have to accept that George W Bush was our president his policies and decisions has caused our countries decline. |

This song is about a guy that knows that he is leading a girl on and he wants to be honest with her. He is emotionally dependant on her, he needs her. But he also knows himself well enough to know that he doesn't really want to be with her. I think that this song is more for himself than her. He can't make up his mind, because he is so emotionally dependant on her one minute, but he can't commit to her and he can't be what she needs him to be. He almost wants her to get so fed up and leave, so that he can stop feeling guilty. But at the same time, he's addicted to feeling like crap and the pain. It's all that he knows. |

| This song is about a a relationship between two friends who are thinking about becoming more than friends and one/or both of them begin to freak out and push the other away. He knows that he is in over his head, because he loves this girl and they are fighting and they haven't even begun dating. He wishes that they weren't friends, so that he could just walk away unscathed and forget about her. | |
