| Sufjan Stevens – Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part 1: The World's Columbian Exposition; Part 2: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is defiantly not exculisively religously. In fact i would say that religon is really incorpurated in the song because of its close relationship to the fall of man. (Im not a religous person for those of you who will assume Im a friom my rant). As science has been promulgated throughout the centuries the Church has lost it's power. As a result of the two (rise of sicence and fall of religon) we have the 'civilization' in this song. It is consummerist and meaniningless. Our society is nihilistic and full of 'hollow' men. I love the last part and I also agree with what everyones been saying, it is his recognition of the emptiness and the vice in the society and his recognition that he has to be brave enough to face the darkness. Wow the more I listen to this song and John wayne gracy jr. the more they remind me of the themes in Heart of Darkness! | |
| Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I agree with waht most of wahts been said, i just thought that I add my two cents with a slightly "Heart of Darkness' twist on it. The first stanza is supposed to show that Wayne Gracy was a human just like us, he was not a monster or seperates species; he was human just like us. He has the same humanity as us, and we, dispite our best attempts at ignorance, have the same savagery within us. This is what Sufjan discuses in his last stanza: "we are really just like him" | |

God i love stars! okay so this is a shot in the dark, purely based on my own opinion: okay i think it is about a man who has throwen himself into the "LA sceen" or something with the underlying principles, ie drugs, money, fame,&sex, to escape from the pain of either not finding love (leading epmty life) or lossing a true love: And then there's love To keep keeping you down You find release In the big time the second verus i tink is talking about a girl hes going to take home: "the last one standing at the bar is the dream that will have to do for today." the last line, mentioning collectiong, could either be refering to him memory or to the collectiong of girls hes had meaningless relationships with. Also the movie references could exemplify his mind set and his desperation for love. |
