it could also be about the wide scope of thoughts and doubts that creep into the groom's head as he's standing in the crowded room of the wedding ceremony, waiting for the bride. first, he hears the knock on the door, his turn to go outside in front of all the people. but their love is a quiet personal love, not one they like to show off, would it better to dispatch ceremony and tradition and have her the way he sees her, just the two of them, in your typical sweater he's come to love? he looks into her eyes and he sees the love "waves" from them, yet he is immediately filled with self-doubt - he can't love her the way he used to ("cant smile easily like in the beginning"). maybe he cheated on her once, maybe he's not ready for the committment. cant they just slip away into bed where he doesn't have to talk, and she can wear nothing but her light little sweater. just my take :) |

this may just be where i am in my life right now, but i think this song is about events, actions, decisions, people, and relationships from the past (ie ghosts). and even though these people aren't with you in person anymore, they are still in your mind, you keep repeating you're out of my mind, but you know they're still on your mind because things are left unresolved. in many cultures, notably the Chinese and Japanese, ghosts represent the souls of mortals who died (often times tragically) but have unfinished business or karma, loose ends essentially. where i'm at now, this song (and album in general) speaks to me about being honest to yourself and to others about who you are, what you've done to others, and reconciling these things, making them right, and moving on. but thats just me :) tegan and sara rock, no band or sound like them. |
